Alphonza Hammonds Sr., 71, of Chattanoog­a, passed away Friday, March 16, 2018, at his residence.

He was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and a member at the Highland Park Congregati­on. He was employed by Kenco Trucking Company.

Alphonza was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Mary Virginia Hammonds; brothers, Clarence Hammonds, Spencer Hammonds, Lionel Hammonds, and Rodney Hammonds; sister, Carmen Hudgins; and 1st wife, Melanie Hammonds.

Survivors include wife, Tanya Hammonds; sons, Reginald Hammonds, Alquintin (Donna) Hammonds, and Alphonza (Mona) Hammonds Jr.; daughters, Altres Hammonds, Carla (Tracy) Blake, Alana Joye Hammonds, all of Chattanoog­a, LaTanya (Leaman) Hammonds, of Birmingham, Ala., and Tiffany Hammonds, of Chattanoog­a; adopted daughter, Melanie Hammonds, of Chattanoog­a; 21 grandchild­ren; 15 great-grandchild­ren; brothers, Ronnie Hudgins, Leon (Joyce) Hudgins, both of Chattanoog­a, Kenneth Hudgins, Curtis Hammonds, both of Atlanta, Ga., Corey Hammonds, of Shreveport, La., Darryl (Kim) Hammonds, Emory Hammonds, and Timothy Hammonds, all of Memphis, Tenn.; sisters, Virginia Baker, of Cleveland, OH, Dorothea (Earl) Wheathersb­y, of Cincinnati, OH, and Jackie (Kenneth) Phillips, of Chattanoog­a; sisters-in-law, Cheryl Hammonds, of Cincinnati, OH and Brenda Hammonds of Chattanoog­a; a host of nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends.

He will lie-in-state today after 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Brother Gene O. Hester giving the discourse. Burial in Forest Hills Cemetery.
