Lee baseball is over .500 with sweep of AUM

Wes Albert and Logan Workman combined to pitch a five-hitter and then Pat Morrow and Jay Prior fashioned a six-hitter as Lee University defeated visiting Auburn-Montgomery 3-2 and 9-3 in Gulf South Conference baseball Friday.

That pushed Lee over .500 for the season both overall at 15-14 and in league play at 8-6.

Flames shortstop Fernando Ortiz was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs batted in and one scored in the first game, and second baseman Tyler Payne was 2-for-4 with the other RBI.

Payne got his 13th stolen base of the season in that game and added his 14th and scored two runs in game two, when Peyton Meeker was 3-for-4 and Jordan Howard 2-for-4, each with a triple and two RBIs. Spencer Mossburg also had two RBIs, and Chase Gadau had one and scored twice. Jonathan Brandt was 2-for2 with two RBIs for AUM (11-15, 4-10).

› Bryan 6-4, Tennessee Wesleyan 2-6: At Athens, Tenn., the NAIA’s ninthranke­d visiting Lions jumped ahead 5-0 in winning the first game but couldn’t complete the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference sweep against the usual league champions.

Fernando Garcia was 2-for-4 with two runs and Cody Young drove in two in the first game for Bryan (25-5, 11-1), while Malik Stephens was 4-for-4 with a triple and Dakota Phillips homered for TWU (17-14, 7-5). The Bulldogs overcame a 4-0 deficit in the finale with a six-run fifth inning. Chris Baetzel was 2-for-3 and matched Stephens with two RBIs, while Collin Ridout was 2-for-3 with one RBI. The Lions’ Garcia was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Rodney Tennie and David Scoggins homered in defeat.

› Maryville 10-6, Covenant 9-1: At Maryville, the hosts swept the threegame USA South series with a 9-1 win Thursday night and Friday’s two victories. The first of those was in 10 innings, with the two sets of Scots combining for seven runs in the 10th.

Caleb Bloye and Tyler Moore each had three hits and two RBIs in that game for Covenant (9-16, 7-8), and Joel Johnson homered and matched them and Trenton Nobles with two RBIs. Devin Cerrato was 1-for-2 with three walks and scored twice after going 2-for-4 with the RBI in Thursday’s game.

› Oglethorpe 8, Sewanee 7: At Atlanta, the Stormy Petrels scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, after giving up two in the top, and won the opener of the Southern Athletic Associatio­n series.

Andrew Mink was 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs for Oglethorpe (16-8, 6-4), while Jared Demkowicz, Trey Akins and Derek Hullings homered for the Tigers (5-16, 0-10). Hullings and Akins each was 2-for-4, Hullings with three RBIs, and Demkowicz walked twice and drove in two runs.

› Columbia State 7-14, Cleveland State 6-3: At Cleveland, the visiting Chargers (19-11-1, 7-4) won the TCCAA doublehead­er as Dorian Berry batted in two runs in the opener and Daniel Freeman and Alex Vazquez combined for seven RBIs in game two.

Joey Roberson homered and Hunter Oliver and Trey Vanderpool each was 2-for-4 in game one for the Cougars (2010, 6-5), and Oliver was 1-for-2 with a homer and Trey Martin was 1-for-1 with a two-run blast in the second game, when Brandon Mason and Vanderpool each was 2-for-3.
