Softball Mocs rebound for split against Samford
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team rebounded from a 15-2 loss with an 11-6 win in Friday’s Southern Conference doubleheader at Samford.
UTC (15-21, 1-4) scored six runs in the fifth inning and five in the seventh of game two. That last set of scores came on a two-run double by Emma Sturdivant and a pinchhit three-run home run by J.J. Hamill, making a winner of pitcher Celie Hudson (6-9).
Sturdivant was 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the game, and Brook Womack and Morgan Kazerooni each hit a tworun single in the fifth inning. Shelby Maze was 4-for-4 and scored twice for Samford (1125, 2-2), which had a tying fiverun fifth, and Ryan Brzozoski, Kathryn Jackson and Mekhi Mayfield had two RBIs apiece.
Madison Couch was 2-for-3 with a homer, four RBIs and two runs and Lexie Higgins was 1-for-1 with two walks, a three-run homer and three runs for the Bulldogs in the five-inning opener. Womack gave UTC a quick lead with a two-run homer in the first inning, and Ashley Conner was 2-for-2, but the Mocs got no other hits and made three errors leading to four unearned runs.
› Chattanooga State 10-11, Southwest Tennessee 0-0: At Chattanooga State, Jenna Edwards and Kaleigh Wynne pitched five-inning one- and two-hitters with eight and seven strikeouts as the nationally 18th-ranked Lady Tigers stretched their winning streak to 16 games with the TCCAA sweep.
Madison Tidmore was 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored for Chattanooga State (28-8, 17-1) in the first game, when Kiley Longmire was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and two runs and Kayla Woody was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run. Woody was 2-for-2 with three RBIs in game two, while Madison Crabtree was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and two runs and Katie Cheeseman was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
› Cleveland State 2-6, Walters State 0-6: At Morristown, Tenn., the Lady Cougars notched the first-game upset and are 14-15 overall, 6-12 in the TCCAA.
› Valdosta State 1, Lee 0: At Valdosta, Ga., the Lady Flames lost the Gulf South Conference series opener despite a four-hitter from pitcher Leigh Beatenbough. Lee (17-19, 7-12) also got only four hits off two pitchers.
› Covenant 1-15, Berea 0-6: At Berea, Ky., the Lady Scots improved to 19-17, 8-6 in the USA South, with two different wins.
Carsyn Stone pitched a two-hit shutout and Shannon Schmitt was 2-for-3 with the lone RBI in game one, when Carlin Labuzan was 2-for-4. Covenant had 15 hits and seven walks in game two, as Jada Allmon was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs, Shelby Ralston and Erika Mast each was 1-for-2 with two walks and four RBIs, Shade Epes hit a two-run homer, Schmitt was 2-for-3 and matched Labuzan with three runs and Madyson Gibbins was 2-for-4 and scored twice.
The Lady Scots ended a four-run first inning with a triple play on Epes’ flyout to right field.
› Hendrix 5-8, Sewanee 2-0: At Sewanee, the host Tigers slipped to 4-23, 1-10 in the Southern Athletic Association, with Friday’s losses. Rachel Hoffman singled in one run and Charlsey Shirey walked three times, once with the bases loaded, in the first game.
Jordan Mallard was 5-for7 with a triple, three doubles and three RBIs in the two games for Hendrix (11-13, 4-7).
