Brooks twins excel for Lee

Lee University junior Justin Brooks won the men’s 400-meter dash this past weekend at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State, where the field was made up mostly of NCAA Division I programs, and he was eighth in the 200. His twin, Josiah Brooks, was second in the triple jump and ninth in the long jump. Justin’s 47.07-second 400 is the best in Division II this outdoor track and field season and bettered his provisiona­l qualifying time for the national meet. Also in Raleigh, Lee’s Emily Buwalda and Harold Smith each was 10th in the 800, and Audrey Smith’s 14th-place time in the women’s 3000 steeplecha­se was a Lady Flames record and a provisiona­l qualifying time. Many of Lee’s athletes were at the Emory Classic in Atlanta, where Camilla Sims set program records with her firstplace discus and fourth-place hammer throws and also finished fourth with Faith Lewis sixth in shot put. Lee’s Amy Carpenter and Logan Hernandez were first and fourth in the seeded 5000 race, and Becca Umbarger and Blakely Moore were first and fifth in the 3000 steeple. Hannah Butolph was second and Jordan Allison tied for eighth in high jump, Kendra Irvine was fourth in pole vault, Allison was seventh in the 400 hurdles and Mikayla Beeler was 10th in the 400 dash. Lee’s Alexis Stevens was eighth with Sewanee’s Karagan Day ninth in the javelin throw. Dalton State’s Nayeli Jacobo and Kay Vradenburg­h were sixth and seventh in the women’s unseeded 1500, and teammate Noor Sabeeh was seventh in the 5000 B section. In men’s highlights at Emory, Lee had first places from Thomas Kelton in the steeple and Ben Tabor in the seeded 5000, with Casey Guthery fourth, and Daniel Surman was fifth in pole vault, Moises Ponce seventh in the seeded 1500 and Evan Hansen eighth in high jump. Bryan College’s James Eliezer was third in the 200, and Sewanee’s Ash Midyett was fifth in the 800.

› Covenant College sophomore William Bryan set Scots records of 49.20 and 22.29 seconds while winning the 400 and finishing second in the 200 at the Hilltop Classic hosted by Birmingham-Southern on Friday, and Micaiah Allison set another school record with his third-place 10:29.51 in the 3000 steeple. Lilly Smith was second in the women’s 5000 with a new Lady Scots standard of 18:29.05. Covenant also got points at the meet with a fifth place for Tristan Dunlavy; sixths for Caleb Aikens, Virginia Kay Roberts and Hannah Samuels; sevenths for Michelann Settle, Abigail Wallace and Ari Zorns; and eighths for

Margaret Fitch, Gracie Holbrook and

Leif Le Mahieu.

SOFTBALL

› Covenant is seeded fourth in the West in the USA South tournament and will play at West No. 3 LaGrange in a doublehead­er Friday. If neither team wins both games, they will play again Saturday to determine which one advances. The six series winners this weekend will move on to double-eliminatio­n play April 13-15 as part of the USA South Spring Sports Festival at LaGrange. Maryville is the top West seed with Piedmont second.
