Second arrest made in failed McMinn motel robbery

A 19-year-old man has been arrested in the botched Easter robbery and shooting of a motel clerk in Athens, Tenn.

Treaven Moses was charged in the attempted robbery on April 9, according to McMinn County Sheriff’s Office booking records. He is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Moses turned himself in at the Bradley County Sheriff’s Department and was transferred to McMinn County to face the charges, Athens Police Department Detective Sgt. Fred Schultz said Monday. McMinn County Jail records list Moses’ charge as aggravated robbery.

Moses appeared for an arraignment on April 10 and has another court date set for Wednesday in General Sessions Court.

A 17-year-old girl turned herself in the day after the incident while authorities continued to look for Moses and at least one other person.

More arrests are expected as the investigation continues, Schultz said.

Police say the incident began early Easter Sunday as an Athens Lodge motel desk clerk locked the lobby’s two sets of doors and started to make his rounds

and have a cigarette. A teen and two men approached the clerk outside and started talking to him, Schultz told the Times Free Press on April 2.

Surveillance video from the motel showed much of the encounter, Schultz said.

“When [the clerk] unlocks the door, one male subject approached him and tells him to ‘give it up,’” the detective said.

“He gets the first set of doors open and when he starts to unlock the second set of doors and starts going in, that’s when the guy pulls him back and puts the gun on him,” Schultz said.

The clerk struggled with the first assailant and a shot was fired that hit the clerk in the leg. The clerk was able to get to the door and held it shut until he could get a key in the door and lock it, Schultz said. “They couldn’t get in there to him then.”

and was followed by the men a few moments later.

The clerk was treated for the gunshot, described as a “throughand-through” wound, and released from the hospital the next day. The girl has been taken to an unnamed out-ofstate facility, authorities said.
