Hops & Opera at Barking Legs Saturday

Enjoy craft beer with a concert by Voci Virili

- STAFF REPORT

There will be plenty of suds and singing on tap when the men of Voci Virili host Hops & Opera on Saturday night, April 28, in Barking Legs Theater.

Hops & Opera is a concert that mixes classical singing by the men’s ensemble with locally brewed craft beer. For this eighth installment of Hops & Opera, The Tap House in St. Elmo will bring the beer.

“This is going to be really fun,” says Harv Wileman, founder and director of Voci Virili. “The Tap House is a new craft beer place founded by a classmate of mine at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences.”

Chris Calhoun, owner/ operator of The Tap House and former Marine, and Wileman were in the first graduating class of CSAS in 1991.

Wileman says the program will range from opera to Broadway to famous male chorus numbers. These will include the tenor/baritone duet from Bizet’s “The Pearl Fishers;” “There’s a Boat That’s Leavin’ Soon for New York” from “Porgy & Bess;” “If I Were a Rich Man” from “Fiddler on the Roof;” “O Isis und Osiris” from The Magic Flute; “There Is Nothin’ Like a Dame” from “South Pacific;” and Verdi’s “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from “Nabucco.”

Featured soloists will be tenors Jeron Burney, James Frost, Daniel Spivey, Harv Wileman, Nicholas Branson, Michael Westmoreland and Bob Sauser; baritones Aaron Murphy, Scott Willis and Stephen Hawkins; bass-baritones John Mburu and Kim Thompson; and bass Harrison Cooke.

Terry Sanford will accompany the singers.

Tickets may be purchased on Barking Legs website. They are $15 with a $1 handling fee. Each ticket includes two free beers straight from a Tap House keg. Additional beers will be sold for $4.

Seating is limited to 130. For tickets: www.barkinglegs.org.
