Jewish Film Series starts Wednesday

Five Jewish-themed, award-winning films produced in Israel and Argentina will be shown on five consecutiv­e Wednesday evenings at 7:15 p.m. beginning May 2 at the Jewish Cultural Center, 5461 North Terrace Road.

An additional screening of the award-winning film “Maktub” will be held Sunday, May 6.

Ann Treadwell, JCC spokeswoma­n, says these films are suitable for ages 16 and older.

An average of 30 films are reviewed by a committee of volunteers each year in order to choose six feature films; five for the series and one for the sponsor event. Films are screened at major national and internatio­nal film festivals, are recommende­d by peers throughout the United States, or brought to the committee’s attention by filmmakers.

› May 2: 7:15 p.m., “In Between,” subtitles, 103 minutes.

Three Palestinia­n women living in an apartment in Tel Aviv try to find a balance between traditiona­l and modern culture. › May 6: Special Sunday screening, 3 p.m., “Maktub,” subtitles, 100 minutes

Two criminals are the sole survivors of a terrorist attack in Jerusalem. They decide to change their ways and become living angels.

› May 9: 7:15 p.m., “The Last Suit,” subtitles, 86 minutes.

Abraham Bursztein, an 88-year-old Jewish tailor, runs away from his home in Buenos Aires to Poland in search of a lost friend.

› May 16: 7:15 p.m., “A Quiet Heart,” subtitles, 92 minutes.

Naomi, a secular young woman, seeks refuge from the pressure of her life as a concert pianist.

› May 23: 7:15 p.m., “Shelter,” subtitles, 93 minutes.

In this thriller, a Mossad agent is called back from sick leave and assigned a job babysittin­g a Lebanese informant.

› May 30: 7:15 p.m., encore screening of “Maktub.”

Tickets for all movies are $8 per person and include compliment­ary popcorn and a soft drink.
