Eastman named Bible chair at McCallie School
Dr. David Eastman will join McCallie School as the Joseph Glenn Sherrill Chair of Bible and Bible department head for the 2018-19 school year. School officials say the hire continues McCallie’s dedication to the “thoughtful study and analysis of the Bible.”
Eastman is an associate professor and head of the religion department at Ohio Wesleyan University. He’s a graduate of Ohio State and has master’s degrees from the University of St. Andrews, Universite de Poitiers in France, Gordon Conwell Seminary and Yale. He also holds a Ph.D from Yale.
“Dr. Eastman’s credentials are impeccable, and he will continue to help our boys learn about the Bible in a way that is accessible but thorough,” said headmaster Lee Burns. “At McCallie, we look to nurture the spiritual, intellectual and physical growth of our students, and this appointment will help us continue that important mission established by McCallie’s founders.”
Eastman is an expert in the New Testament and early church history. He is also a man of deep faith whose concern for his students was evident during the interview process, according to school officials. Beyond his biblical scholarship, Eastman is a scholar of baseball. He played semi-professional baseball in France and will do some baseball coaching for McCallie.
A thoughtful study and analysis of the Bible has been part of McCallie’s curriculum since the founding of the all-boys boarding and day school in 1905. Coursework in the Bible department remains a requirement for graduation.
The Joseph Glenn Sherrill Chair of Bible was established in 1986 by Rodolph G. Sherrill and Glenda Hamilton in memory of their father.
McCallie currently serves 941 students in grades 6-12 from 24 states and 10 countries.
