Gordon shines as Lookouts win to take over first place

- STAFF REPORT

The Chattanooga Lookouts are now the first-place Chattanooga Lookouts after Wednesday night’s 4-2 victory over the Jackson Generals at AT&T Field.

Lookouts second baseman Nick Gordon had a monster evening with a home run and two doubles as Chattanooga improved to 20-13 and took over the top spot in the Southern League’s North Division for the first time this season. The Generals, who raced out to a 15-2 start last month, dropped into second at 19-13.

An announced crowd of 4,454 attended Wednesday’s game.

Gordon notched his third homer of the season and his seventh and eighth doubles. The younger brother of former Lookouts shortstop and current Seattle center fielder Dee Gordon raised his already healthy batting average to .339.

Dee Gordon, incidentally, is hitting .340 for the Mariners.

Jackson grabbed the game’s first lead when Josh Prince opened with a homer to left field, but Gordon answered later in the first inning with a homer to right. A Rudy Flores single to right scored Prince in the third inning to put the Generals up 2-1, but Edgar Corcino knotted the score by leading off the bottom of the third with a homer to center.

Gordon’s first double of the night occurred in the fifth inning, and he scored on Alex Perez’s two-out single to left to put the Lookouts up 3-2. Gordon’s second double scored Tanner English, who had reached on a throwing error, to give Chattanooga its 4-2 advantage.
