State parks to offer free hikes June 2
June 2 could be a good day for those who enjoy hiking in Tennessee. The state park system will have free, guided hikes at all 56 state parks that Saturday to celebrate National Trails Day.
Tennessee State Parks offer over 1,000 miles of trail, ranging from easy and paved to rugged backcountry. Activities range, depending on the location, but include day hikes, night hikes, historical hikes, trail clean-up hikes and more.
“These hikes recognize the important individual and community benefits of getting outside, including better health, economic infusion for local communities, and appreciation and stewardship of our public lands,” Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Deputy Commissioner Brock Hill said.
Georgia also will host guided hikes at many of its state parks that day. Parking fees still will be collected, but some of the hikes are free.
The following state parks in the area will host hikes:
Booker T. Washington State Park: 10 a.m.-12 p.m. nature hike. Contact Ranger Basham with any questions at 423-322-5160.
Hiwassee/Ocoee Scenic River State Park: 1-mile guided hike focusing on native plants, wildlife and history. The hike will be from 5-6 p.m. Call 423-263-0050 for more info.
Red Clay State Historic Park: Meet at the gazebo for a 2-4 p.m. hike. Call 423-478-0339 for more information.
Fall Creek Falls State Park: No more room available.
South Cumberland State Park: The park will be hosting a volunteer work day from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Volunteers should bring snacks, water and sturdy shoes. The group will meet at 1869 Old CCC Road in Sherwood, Tennessee.
Cloudland Canyon State Park: The park will host a dog hike from 10-11 a.m. The hike will be 2 miles along the Backcountry trail. All dogs must be on a 6-foot or shorter leash. Parking is $5.
› Fort Mountain State Park: This Chatsworth-based park will host a sunset hike to the West Overlook from 7:30-9 p.m. The hike is easy to moderate and costs $3. Parking is an additional $5. Call 706-422-1932 for details.
› James H Floyd State Park: This nature hike will highlight animals and plant life in the park. It is a moderate to strenuous hike from 3-5 p.m. There is a $5 charge for parking. Call 706-857-0826 for more information.
