Vandy wins at NCAA regional

CLEMSON, S.C. — Drake Fellows threw seven scoreless innings to lead Vanderbilt to a 2-0 victory over St. John’s to start the NCAA baseball tournament Friday.

Fellows (7-4) allowed three hits and two walks while striking out eight for Vanderbilt (32-25). Reid Schaller pitched a scoreless eighth, and Chandler Day finished the shutout an inning later.

Philip Clarke hit a twoout bloop double to drive in a run in the first, and Jayson Gonzalez hit a solo home run in the fifth.

St. John’s starter Sean Mooney (11-3), who gave up both runs, allowed five hits and three walks.

Vanderbilt moved into a winners-bracket game today in the regional hosted by Clemson (45-14) that includes Morehead State (37-24). St. John’s (39-16) will play an eliminatio­n game today.

› OXFORD, Miss. — The start of the regional on the Ole Miss campus was pushed back a day after both scheduled games were postponed because of heavy rain that created poor field conditions.

Ole Miss (46-15), the fourth seed nationally, will play its regional opener against Saint Louis (38-18) tonight. Tennessee Tech (48-9) and Missouri State (39-15) meet earlier in the day.

It was still raining when the decision was made to postpone, more than 2 1/2 hours after Tennessee Tech and Missouri State had been scheduled to start the first game. The game never started because of thundersto­rms that moved through the area and flooded the field in several places.

› ATHENS, Ga. — Regional host Georgia (37-19) will play its NCAA opener against Campbell (35-24) today. The game was scheduled for Friday, but inclement weather delayed the opener between Duke and Troy, pushing the Bulldogs back to a noon first pitch today. › Auburn 13, Northeaste­rn 4 RALEIGH, N.C. — Edouard Julien and Steven Williams each hit a three-run homer to lead the Tigers (40-21), and Williams finished 4-for-4 with four RBIs.

Auburn led 3-2 after 2 1/2 innings but blew the game open with three runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. The Tigers finished with 17 hits as five players had multi-hit games.

Tanner Burns (7-4) was the winning pitcher, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in six innings.

Charlie McConnell had three hits, including a solo homer in the fifth, for Northeaste­rn (36-20).

› South Carolina 8, Ohio State 3 GREENVILLE, N.C. — South Carolina pushed ahead with five runs in the seventh inning to win its regional opener.

The second-seeded Gamecocks (34-24) trailed 2-0 before the big inning, which included Danny Blair’s three-run homer. Justin Row followed with a two-run single. The Gamecocks added three runs in the eighth and finished with 14 hits.

Eddy Demurias (7-0) earned the win, allowing four hits and a run in three innings.

Dillon Dingler hit a solo homer and drove in two runs for the Buckeyes (36-23), who had nine hits. › Oklahoma 20, Mississipp­i State 10 TALLAHASSE­E, Fla. — Oklahoma scored nine runs in the seventh inning and had its most runs in a regional game since 1999.

The Sooners (37-23), who trailed 10-7 after six innings, sent 15 batters to the plate in the seventh as they got seven hits and took advantage of a pair of errors. Thomas Hughes had two hits in the inning, while Brandon Zaragoza and Cade Harris each drove in a pair of runs.

Zaragoza went 4-for7 and drove in four runs, while Justin Mitchell, Kyle Mendenhall and Blake Brewster all had three hits.

The Bulldogs (31-26) had four home runs in the loss. Dustin Skelton, who had a two-run shot in the second for his first collegiate home run, drove in four runs.

Kyle Tyler (6-2) got the win in relief and J.P. France (4-5) got the loss as the teams used a combined 13 pitchers.

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Jacob Maekawa hit a two-run double in the second inning, and Antoine Duplantis, Jake Slaughter and Zach Watson had RBI singles in the sixth to help the Tigers (38-25), who are making their seventh straight postseason appearance, stay out of the losers bracket.

LSU starter Nick Bush went five innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Devin Fontenot (3-0) got the win in three innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

› Texas A&M 10, Indiana 3

AUSTIN, Texas — John Doxakis had a career-high 12 strikeouts while allowing only one hit over six innings as the Aggies (4020) won their 10th consecutiv­e NCAA regional game.

Doxakis (8-5) struck out the first five batters he faced. The sophomore lefthander, who had 10 strikeouts against Auburn in the Southeaste­rn Conference tournament last week, walked two and gave up one unearned run.

Zach DeLoach and Logan Foster each had three hits for Texas A&M.

Luke Miller homered twice — solo shots in the seventh and ninth innings to give him 13 for the season — for Indiana (38-18).

› Arkansas 10, Oral Roberts 2

FAYETTEVIL­LE, Ark. — Three players homered and Blaine Knight (11-0) allowed just two runs in eight innings as the Razorbacks (40-18) rolled.

Heston Kjerstad hit a two-run homer in the third inning for the game’s first runs, and Jax Biggers and Carson Shaddy went deep in the sixth to make it 6-2. Kjerstad also had a solo homer in the eighth.

Riley Keizor had a pair of solo homers for Oral Roberts (38-20).
