CFC women win; 5-0 in conference

- BY GENE HENLEY STAFF WRITER

After a busy weekend, the Chattanooga Football Club women are in complete control of their conference.

Sunday’s 2-0 win over Peachtree City MOBA at Finley Stadium gave CFC a 5-0 mark in the Women’s Premier Soccer League’s Southeast Conference, putting it a clear eight points ahead of its nearest competition in league play with only three regular-season matches left.

The five wins match CFC’s win total from its first season of competition in 2014, and CFC can clinch a playoff berth with a road win over the Memphis Lobos (2-3) on June 24.

Carlie Banks — who was credited with the team’s lone goal in Friday’s 1-0 road win over the Nashville Rhythm — added another goal Sunday, her fourth of the season, on a chip over the keeper in the 28th minute. Summer Lanter had a header for the assist.

Caitlin Hayes scored her first goal of the season in the 58th minute on a header that was assisted by Ashleigh Cade.

CFC’s defense continued its solid play Sunday, earning its fourth shutout of 2018. Cosette Morche was in goal for the win.

CFC now has 15 points in the standings, eight more than Peachtree City and nine ahead of the Lobos, with season sweeps of Peachtree City and Nashville. Those two, along with the Knoxville-based Emerald Force have been eliminated from the conference title race.
