Always wanting more; Roseanne Barr steps aside and a free-flying frankfurter

- JAY GREESON

Everywhere you look over the past week, the images have been about Donald Trump and separating parents who entered the country illegally from their children.

Those images (the real ones, anyway) have raised a national discussion that rightly forced the president to reconsider policy.

That’s how things should work, as folks from all ideologies try to address the issues we know we should work out together.

But here’s the disconnect. Now Nancy Pelosi and her minions are “outraged” about detaining the family as a whole.

Say what?

It’s still illegal to be an illegal immigrant, right Nancy? And make no mistake, the stress, strain and ripple effects on everything from emergency rooms to schools is being affected by our immigration difficulties.

Again, before you Trump-haters fire up the email, pulling toddlers from parents was something that horrified all of us. Something that we should be better than. But let’s not forget that while the kids are the victims here, the crimes are twofold — the moral injustices of taking kids from parents and the criminal infractions of their parents.

BARR TAB SETTLED

Not sure if you saw this but Roseanne Barr has settled with ABC.

Settled, you ask? Yes, settled.

The character “Roseanne” became a TV hit twice and was based on Barr’s stand-up comedy routine, making it fundamentally her intellectual property.

She, as everyone from Hixson to the Himalayas has heard, was fired for racist rants on social media during a time she alleged she was under the influence of a sleep aid.

So she settled to make sure the rest of the cast and crew of almost 200 folks could continue to work on what ABC has announced will be a spinoff called “The Conners” in the near future.

Kudos, Roseanne. You made a big mistake but made sure the folks most directly affected by that mistake were cared for.

Here’s her statement. It’s clear she was thinking of others when she made this deal:

“I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from ‘Roseanne,’” she told ABC News. “I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”

Side note: Here’s betting the first episode of “The Conners” posts a monster number. From there, well, that’s anyone’s guess.

HOT DIGGITY

OK, because not all headlines are created equally, we will give the background, and then share the best headline we saw from the strange story of the week.

The mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies — he’s known as the Phillie Phanatic, and since we’re not really sure what a Phillie is, trying to describe the Phanatic is pointless — had a strange Monday.

During his normal routines, he fired off his hot dog cannon, which is a lot like a T-shirt cannon only it fires frankfurters held together by duct tape to make sure that they stay together when shot.

Well, on Monday, a darting dog caught Kathy McVay in the face, knocking off her glasses, leaving her with a black eye and in need of a CAT scan.

As for the headline, well, here’s this one from the Tallahassee Democrat: “Phillie Phanatic’s wayward wiener hits woman in face, causes injuries.”

There’s a lesson somewhere in there, no?
