Weather factor at The Honors
Qualifying medalist Addison Baggarly from the Tri-Cities knocked out University of Tennessee at Chattanooga coach Colette Murray and Cleveland’s
Rheagan Hall in the first two rounds of match play Wednesday in the championship division of the Tennessee Women’s Amateur golf tournament at The Honors Course, winning 8 and 6, then 6 and 4. But Baggarly was one of the few to make it through both rounds before inclement weather Wednesday evening suspended play for the day. Sophie Linder won 6 and 4 against Meghann Stamps, then 5 and 4 against Catherine Caudill, and she’ll face Baggarly in the quarterfinals. Jenna Burris from Manchester and Middle Tennessee State University also won twice, 4 and 3 over Jesse Lawley and by the same score over Melissa Walsh. Burris will face either Alexandra Farnsworth or Chattanooga-area golfer Samantha Griffith in the quarters — Farnsworth was 1 up through nine holes when play was halted Wednesday, one of five matches still in limbo and to be resumed today, weather permitting. Other Chattanooga-area golfers in those matches: Ryann McCuistion was all square through nine versus Allison Woodward, with Malia Stovall 3 down through 12 holes against Mariah Smith. Griffith won 3 and 2 against Maddie Everts in her first match, while McCuistion won 3 and 2 against Rachael McMahan and Stovall won 4 and 3 against Caroline Caudill.Three of the four winners in the Flight 1 quarterfinals were Charleston’s Maggie Scott and Chattanooga’s Kristy Snow and Darlene Werhnyak. Scott won 4 and 2 against Susan Miller and will face Snow — a 3 and 2 winner against Terri McAngus — in a semifinal pitting the Nos. 8 and 4 seeds, respectively. Werhnyak beat Rhonda Switzer-Nadasdi 4 and 3 to set up her pairing with Evelyn Blackmon, a 3 and 2 winner against Jean Kraft.
› Tullahoma’s Jacob Uehlein shot a 5-over-par 76 during Wednesday’s second round of the 2018 Tennessee Junior Amateur and was 6 over for the 54-hole tournament at Stones River Country Club in Murfreesboro. That had Uehlein tied for 10th with four others as Maryville’s Matt Copeland and A. Jacks Green from the Nashville area shared the lead at 2 over after Copeland shot a 73 and Green a 76 in the second round. The tournament is set to conclude today, with Bryce Lewis (77) — a recent Hendersonville High School graduate who is headed to the MTSU program — and Nashville-area golfer Cameron Tankersley (71) tied for third a stroke back. Three players were another stroke back in fifth at 4 over, including Knoxville’s Jake Hall, whose 70 was the day’s only round under par. Cleveland’s Cade Puryear (78) and Council Fire Golf Club representative Joe Carter were among those tied for 17th at 9 over, and Puryear’s Walker Valley High School teammate
Parker Gray (78) was tied for 29th at 11 over in the 69-player field.
› Recent North Murray High School graduate Spencer Alexander signed Tuesday to continue his golf career with Georgia Northwestern Technical College. Alexander shot a 77 in the GHSA Area 4-AAA tournament in Calhoun this spring with GNTC coach Eddie Jackson in attendance. “Spencer kind of fell in our lap a month or two ago, right before school ended,” Jackson said in a release. “I was really impressed with his work ethic. He’s at the golf course pretty much 24/7. … We’ve recruited young men that really want to buy in and work hard, and that describes Spencer Alexander to a tee. He has a good, solid game all around. We need to fine-tune a few things with his game, but I think he’s going to be a big asset to us this fall and next spring.”
