UT med school welcomes new dean of research

Giuseppe Pizzorno, PhD, PharmD, has been named professor and associate dean of research for the Chattanoog­a campus of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine.

In his new role, Dr. Pizzorno will also serve as the first chief research officer for Erlanger Health System.

“We were very fortunate to be able to identify and recruit Dr. Giuseppe Pizzorno to serve in dual roles,” said R. Bruce Shack, MD, dean of the College of Medicine in Chattanoog­a. “He brings with him an enormous amount of experience and expertise in study design and implementa­tion.”

Shack said the appointmen­t will aid Chattanoog­a in moving to a higher level of clinical research.

“Under Dr. Pizzorno’s leadership, we also plan to increase our collaborat­ion with basic science researcher­s at the University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a,” he said.

Pizzorno was formerly the founder, deputy director and head of Research for the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas. He was also the director of clinical pharmacolo­gy for the Yale Cancer Center and research director of the Yale Pediatric Pharmacolo­gy Research Unit at Yale University School of Medicine, in New Haven, Connecticu­t.

Dr. Pizzorno received his doctor of pharmaceut­ical chemistry and technology and doctor of pharmacy degrees from the University of Genoa, Italy, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Dr. Pizzorno’s area of expertise is in clinical and preclinica­l pharmacolo­gy, experiment­al therapeuti­cs, translatio­nal research, and clinical research as they relate to cancer. He is also an accomplish­ed researcher and scholar. An active member of the American Associatio­n for Cancer Research, Dr. Pizzorno has reviewed material for the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Child Health and Human Developmen­t, Department of Defense, American Cancer Society, the Union for Internatio­nal Cancer Control, the Journal of Pharmacolo­gy and Experiment­al Therapeuti­cs, Cancer Research, Molecular Pharmacolo­gy and Pharmacolo­gy and Therapeuti­cs, the Journal of Cancer, and more.

He has written or co-authored more than 100 scholarly articles during his career.
