Hamilton County Criminal Court Clerk
OFFICE: HAMILTON COUNTY CRIMINAL COURT CLERK
Party: Republican Previous public office
experience: Served for 10 years as East Ridge City councilman and mayor, nine years in the Tennessee House of Representatives, four years as Hamilton County Criminal Court clerk Why voters should choose me: As Criminal Court clerk, I have increased collections, increased revenues, streamlined procedures, reduced the operating budget and have come in under budget each year. Biggest challenge facing the office I seek: Collecting retainable amounts of money from defendants sufficient to pay the salaries of our employees (much of what we collect goes to other agencies).
How I will address this
challenge: Continue to seek additional collections, subsequently increasing revenues and retainable money. We will also continue to seek changes in legislation that would have a positive impact on our ability to retain and collect more fees and fines from defendants. This is an area in which we have been very successful.
Policy position of mine that may surprise
people: I empower my employees to do the job they are trained to do. If they fail, it is likely a reflection of my poor judgment by placing them in that position and not necessarily a result of their shortcomings. I generally look at myself first when a problem occurs.
Public servant I most
admire: My father, Rev. Billy Dean. He never held political office, but he pastored eight churches within a 50-mile radius of home. His first pastorate began when he was 17. He taught me how to serve people.
