DSC’s Lee helps Team USA win
Dalton State College junior golfer S.M. Lee continued a sensational 2018 with a 2-1-1 record in Team USA’s 38.5-21.5 victory over the international amateurs this past weekend in the Arnold Palmer Cup competition at the Evian Resort in France. In retaining the Palmer Cup, the United States was the first team to win it on foreign soil since the Americans in 2010. Team USA leads the series 12-9-1. The competition includes men and women, and Team USA’s Emilia Migliaccio went 4-0 for the three-day event. Lee won 2 up with Kaitlynn Papp from the University of Texas in mixed four-ball Friday, and they rallied from 3 down to halve their Saturday morning match. Lee’s team lost 5 and 4 in men’s four-ball, but he won his singles match Sunday 2 and 1.
› Chattanooga Golf & Country Club won the A and B divisions of the Chattanooga Women’s Golf Association’s annual city team competition Monday at WindStone Golf Club, and Council Fire won the C title in a playoff against Brainerd. CGCC’s Blakesly Warren, Mary Melissa Manuel, Ryan Kopet and Georgia McCravey combined for a 65 in winning the A Division, and Kristy Snow, Janet Horton, Kandy Berke and Lesley Dunn earned B honors with a 74. Council Fire’s and Brainerd’s C teams each shot 80, but Tracie Blakesly, Dona Robinson, Teresa Van Arsdale and Donna Sebes prevailed over Diane Bunch, Donna Chandler, Judy Nowell and Judy Acuff when Sebes had the only par on the second playoff hole. The Women’s City individual tournament will be at WindStone next Monday through Wednesday.
› The 55th annual Tennessee Girls’ Junior Amateur tournament runs today through Thursday at Old Fort Golf Club in Murfreesboro, and the 52-player field includes Preslee Yoder from Chattanooga, Zacori Hill from Hixson, Lindsey Hollis from Signal Mountain, Hannah Nall and Kyndall Shamblin from Cleveland, Rheagan Hall from Charleston, Clara Powell from Sewanee, Ashley Gilliam from Manchester, Kelsee Neely from Crossville and Macy Moses from Madisonville.
BASKETBALL
› Tusculum University announced Monday that Zach Holt is following head coach J.T. Burton from Motlow State Community College as the Pioneers’ lead assistant for men’s basketball. Holt was the top assistant the last three years at Motlow, where 1999 Tennessee Wesleyan graduate Burton was his boss the first two before spending the 2017-18 season as an assistant at Morehead State in NCAA Division I. Holt’s three years with the Bucks were the best stretch in program history, with a 78-21 record, four All-Americans. NJCAA Region VII tournament titles the past two seasons, two region tournament MVPs and two national all-tournament selections. Holt played for Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2005-09.
SWIMMING
› The Ooltewah Tidal Waves completed an 8-0 regular season in the Chattanooga Area Swim League’s top tier, the Blue Division, with a 409.5-383.5 win Monday over runner-up Stuart Heights, but the Catoosa Great White Sharks lost for the first time in the Red Division, 451-360 to the second-place Wavemakers of Chattanooga Golf & Country Club. The White Division champion Red Bank Gators, meanwhile, closed out a 7-1 season with a 447-250 defeat of the Cumberland Currents. The Bill Caulkins City Meet is set for Friday and Saturday at the Fort Oglethorpe city pool.
ACADEMICS
› The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga had 27 of its spring-sports athletes (including basketball players) earn 32 spots on the 2018 spring Academic All-Southern Conference team, including Megan Woods from the women’s golf team and Abby Bateman and Julia Henderson from both indoor and outdoor track and field with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Inclusion requires a minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA. Other Mocs at 3.8 or better were track and field athletes Haley Morris (3.99), Mercedes Bright (3.88) and Emily Poole (3.87); softball player Morgan Kazeroni (3.94); golfers Holly Morgan (3.90) and Monica San Juan (3.82); and basketballer Aryanna Gilbert (3.83).
