The Signal back in action with Kurt Vile

- STAFF REPORT

Kurt Vile first made noise as a musician as co-founder and guitarist with the indie rock band The War on Drugs. It’s as a solo artist, however, that he is perhaps best known, thanks to the single “Pretty Pimpin’.”

With its catchy hooks and clever lyrics dealing with not recognizing the man in the mirror, it became a chart-topper in 2016 and made him a star in the Adult Alternative Song scene.

Critics and fans couldn’t help but note the similarities in his music approach and that of Australian guitarist/ singer Courtney Barnett, so it was not surprising to many when the two collaborated last year on an album, “Lotta Sea Lice.”

Both are clever observers of life who see beauty in the mundane and celebrate the ironic. And both back their music by lots of guitar. For the video behind the first single, “Over Everything,” they feature those skills, but with the voices coming out of the face of the other. It’s a perfect mashup of both the song and the two artists.

Vile will perform Saturday, July 14, at The Signal, 1810 Chestnut St., with his band, the Violators. Tickets are $25 and $28. Showtime is 8:30.
