The political action committee affiliated with the Hamilton County Education Association released its recommendations for school board candidates Monday. The recommendations, a mix of incumbents and their opponents, come just after early voting began Friday.

The Hamilton County Education Association-Fund for Children and Public Education (HCEA-FCPE) recommended the following candidates for the five open seats on the school board:

Miracle Hurley in the District 3 race

Karitsa Mosley Jones, incumbent, for District 5

Jenny Hill for District 6

Tucker McClendon for District 8

Steve Highlander, incumbent, for District 9

“After interviewing candidates, we believe those we have recommended will be the strongest advocates for our students, educators and school community,” said Giselle Palmer, chairwoman of the HCEAFCPE, in a statement.

Last week, candidates were interviewed by a team of educators after submitting questionnaires several weeks ago.

Though the recommendations stick with some current school board members, such as citing Mosley Jones’ “proven track record of strong and passionate advocacy for students, teachers and schools,” according to a news release, it also turned to several of those opposing seated board members.

As for District 3’s Hurley, the PAC noted her “business background in youth services and behavioral health will provide a strong voice and a much-needed perspective,” according to the release.

It also noted “newcomer” McClendon’s “fresh perspective and strong vision” in its recommendations.

The HCEA is an affiliate of the Tennessee Education Association.
