Baylor swimmers win national titles

Baylor School’s swim teams both were the 2017-18 national dual-meet champions for independen­t schools of up to 800 students in grades 9-12, according to the sport’s interschol­astic coaches associatio­n. The Bolles School in Jacksonvil­le was second to each of Dan Flack’s Baylor teams. Winning for the fifth time and the second year in a row, the Baylor boys totaled 6,004 points to Bolles’ 5,678, and the Baylor girls rose from seventh in 2016-17 with their 5,855 points to Bolles’ 5,807.

› Two 6-0, 6-0 wins by Girls Preparator­y School tennis coach Sue Bartlett helped Great Britain’s 60-over women sweep their Alice Marble Cup matches Sunday and Monday against Turkey and Ireland in the ITF Seniors World Team Championsh­ips in Ulm, Germany. Great Britain won 72 of 74 games and plays today against Netherland­s, which won 72 of 87 against the same Group C opponents. Manker Patten teaching pro Wesley Cash is part of the United States men’s team in the correspond­ing Von Cramm Cup; his team won Sunday against Austria and faces Switzerlan­d today.

› The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s soccer team begins its season at 3 p.m. Friday at Finley Stadium against Alabama A&M after tying Belmont 1-1 and Tennessee Tech 2-2 in preseason exhibition­s. Tech, picked to finish third in the Ohio Valley Conference, led 2-0 on Sunday in Cookeville before UTC’s Masey Fox scored in the 72nd minute on a Catherine Meyer cross set up by freshman Hollie Massey. Chloe Arnold netted a tying penalty kick in the 75th minute. The Mocs had advantages of 8-6 in shots and 5-2 in shots on goal. “It was a very competitiv­e match against an always tough opponent,” UTC coach Gavin McKinney said in a school release. “We showed great spirit in the match coming back from 2-0 down. We have learned a lot from our two friendlies.” There is no admission charge for the Mocs’ home games, although there is a fee for parking. The stadium has implemente­d a clear-bag policy this year.

GOLF

› Sewanee golfer Gray Matthews tied for sixth place at 208 for 54 holes in the Carolinas Open tournament last week in Greensboro, North Carolina, and that was with a closing 74. He was second after the first round with a 65 that included six birdies at Starmount Forest Country Club. Matthews made the all-conference first team for Sewanee this past spring, when he finished third in the Southern Athletic Associatio­n tournament.

› Harry Hartman Sr. and Jr. won the 2018 Valleybroo­k member-guest tournament this past weekend by taking Flight 1 and then winning the shootout. The Hartmans defeated Flight 3 winners Cal Atchley and Sam Bedwell in the shootout final. Other shootout participan­ts were Flight 2 winners Jack Pangle and Brent Copeland and Flight 3 runners-up (chosen in a blind draw) Darryl Dodson and Lee Robertson. Ed Shields and Phillip Rossman won Flight 4; Mark Harrelson and Anthony Wallace prevailed in Flight 5. Other runners-up were Jimmy Jones and John Morrison (1), Rick Prichard and Oscar Scruggs (2), Nick Chuba and T.J. Derrick (4) and Royce Raines and Rodney Hayes (5).
