Authorities work to identify woman

- STAFF REPORT

Authorities say they are still working to identify the woman shot by law enforcement officials after a high-speed chase that ended Wednesday in Dalton, Georgia.

The woman, who was airlifted from the scene, remains hospitalized in serious condition at a local hospital, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles said Thursday.

The male suspect was identified as 56-year-old Parrish Royal-Smalley, of Jonesboro, Georgia. He was treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and released into custody.

He now faces a slew of charges in Whitfield County, including driving under the influence, fleeing police and possession of a stolen vehicle. He also faces charges in Cleveland, Tennessee, police spokeswoman Sgt, Evie West said, including shoplifting, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery and posession of a weapon by a convicted felon.

When the woman is identified, she will be charged with shoplifting and aggravated assault, West said.

Wednesday’s incident started just after 5 p.m. in Cleveland, Tennessee, when Smalley and a woman reportedly shoplifted $600-$700 worth of merchandise from the Kohl’s department store on Frontage Road.

The two led multiple agencies on a chase south on Interstate 75 through Hamilton County and eventually into Catoosa and Whitfield counties in Georgia.

Smalley surrendered after officers stopped the vehicle, but the woman fled again in the vehicle. She eventually was stopped and got out of the vehicle with two handguns.

Multiple officers from Hamilton County and the Tunnel Hill Police Department then fired at the woman, injuring her.

A Whitfield County sheriff’s deputy trained as a medic provided life-saving treatment to her until she was airlifted to the hospital. No officers were injured.
