Chatt State gets first volleyball win

Chattanoog­a State’s first-ever home volleyball match also became the program’s first victory — 3-1 Tuesday night against Hiwassee. The set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 25-18. Kayla Wimpee, the only non-freshman, made 14 kills and Brieana Hemphill and Sidney Killingswo­rth had 10 each for the winners (1-4), while Emily Redden had 23 assists and Dakota Rawiszer had 18 assists with four aces. Sakari Pack had seven kills and Cayla Jacob had six and matched Hemphill with five blocks. Scarlett Hamrick led in digs with nine.

SOCCER

› University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a sophomore Chloe Arnold was named Tuesday the Southern Conference women’s soccer player of the week after the Mocs’ 6-1 loss at perennial Sun Belt Conference champion South Alabama and 3-0 win at Sun Belt member Troy. Arnold scored the UTC goal at USA and the first goal at Troy, giving her at least one in each of the 3-1 Mocs’ games. She has five in all, making her the NCAA leader. “We’ve improved, we’re connecting passes really well, which in turn creates space for her, (and) she’s done a really nice job of making her final movement good,” coach Gavin McKinney said in a UTC release. The Mocs host another Sun Belt team, Georgia State, at 7 p.m. Friday at Finley Stadium.

› Tennessee Wesleyan freshman Harry Baggaley was the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference men’s soccer offensive player of the week after his three goals and an assist in two matches at SCAD Savannah’s tournament. He has four goals for the 3-0 Bulldogs. The TWU women lost 1-0 on a late goal Tuesday night at Georgia Gwinnett, which led 18-3 in shots, 9-1 in on-goal attempts and 10-1 in corner kicks. Lauren Teal made seven saves in defeat.

› The Dalton State College soccer teams beat visiting Talladega on Tuesday, 9-0 in the women’s game and 5-2 in the men’s.

Adriana Romero had three goals and an assist, Sarah Chamale had two goals and an assist and Adrianna Arjoon scored the last two goals for the Lady Roadrunner­s (2-0), who had a 47-0 margin in shots. Maria Vasquez netted the first goal at 12:19 from an Alondra Salaises assist, Rocio Carrizales also scored and Kaela Ebanks and Caylee Carpenter each had two assists. For the 2-0-1 DSC men, Daniel Valenciano registered two goals and two assists and Frank Herrera, Tyler Hudson and Sebastian Guzman also scored.

› Two goals by Life University’s Isabela Solorzano-Sierra in the final 14 minutes doomed the Bryan College women (1-2) to a 2-0 defeat Tuesday in Dayton. Both scores were double-assisted by Elin Josefsson and Katelynn Harbeke. The shots count was 8-8.

AUTO RACING

› The only woman in 65 entrants in the class, Amy Farrow, was the Super Pro drag-racing winner Saturday at Brainerd Motorsport­s Park. Farrow won in a big-block dragster prepared by her husband, Steve Farrow, with a 5.87-second run on a 5.87 dial. Troy Hickman of Ball Ground, Georgia, was second with a 5.87 on a 5.89 dial in a 1982 Chevrolet Nova. Marshall York of Tallapoosa, Georgia, won the Foot Brake class with a 6.61 on a 6.61 dial in a 1972 Nova, and Rodney Johnson of Charleston was second with a 7.12 on a 7.11 in a 1968 Camaro. Kaleb Winters of Soddy-Daisy won out of 24 Junior Dragster racers with a 7.94 on a 7.96. Drew Brown of Chickamaug­a was second and Chloe Wilson was third.

GOLF

› Both Dalton State golf teams were ranked No. 2 in the NAIA preseason polls after finishing second in the 2018 men’s national tournament and fourth in the women’s event. The defending champion Oklahoma City men were a unanimous choice for No. 1 going into 2018-19, and the reigning SCAD Savannah women got 17 of 18 firstplace votes with DSC receiving the other. “It shows how hard we have all worked as a team over the years,” Dalton State senior Katie Dalton said, “and how we have built the program. … We have a very strong team this year and gained three great players.” Tennessee Wesleyan headed the “others receiving votes” for the women’s Top 25.
