Breakout game for Nunnelly

Bryce Nunnelly finished his first season at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with 89 yards on seven catches.

He equaled that production — and then some — Thursday night in his first game of season two.

Nunnelly had 161 yards on seven catches in the Mocs’ game against Tennessee Tech. Lightning and weather forced a two-hour weather delay. The game could have been called, but Golden Eagles head coach Dewayne Alexander refused to accept that option.

The Mocs led 34-10 with 10:25 remaining as of press time.

Nunnelly formed a solid connection with quarterback Nick Tiano starting on the third possession. The two teamed up on a 42-yard catch on the first play of the drive, which led to a Victor Ulmo field goal and a 6-0 lead.

After the Golden Eagles had taken a 7-6 lead, Nunnelly was called on again, taking a screen pass on a third-and-20 and sprinting 89 yards for a score. The score seemed to completely open up the UTC offense, which had 306 yards on 34 plays after the first quarter.

From that point forward, Tyrell Price had a 40-yard scoring run, set up by a Tiano 24-yard scamper. Wil Young had a 63-yard reception for a score as the Mocs had two rushes of at least 20 yards and four receptions of at least 30 yards after a 2017 season in which they had eight such plays (three 20-yard runs, five 30-yard completions).
