Soccer Mocs fall in overtime

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s soccer team completed its four-game run through the Sun Belt Conference with a 2-1 overtime home loss Friday night against Georgia State. Bailey Gale converted a Chloe Arnold assist into a UTC lead just 5:10 into the match, but that turned out to be it for the 3-2 Mocs’ scoring, despite a slight 7-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-2 margin in corner kicks. Georgia State (2-2-1) had a 14-11 margin in overall shots and scored in the 60th and 105th minutes on goals by Brooke Shank and Hannah Davis from passes by Ava Jouvenel

and Caitlin Ray.

› The Sewanee men’s soccer team began 2018 play with a 2-1 overtime victory Friday at Eastern Mennonite, while the Sewanee women started with a 1-1 tie against Huntingdon at home, also in overtime. In a game they led 6-2 in shots on goal, the Sewanee guys gave up a rebound goal in the 31st minute but equalized with Evan Poole’s goal from an Ethan Dutka assist at 72:14 and won on Kyle Johnston’s score from Thompson Schollaert’s assist 6:55 into extra time. Both scores in the women’s game were within 12 minutes of each other in the second half, Sam Curtis netting an

› Covenant lost 4-0 at Messiah in its soccer season opener Friday in Pennsylvan­ia but got a 7-0 men’s victory against Tennessee Wesleyan’s developmen­t team in the David Taaffe Invitation­al on Lookout Mountain. Josh Brower netted the first goal of each half for the Scots, and Connor McGimsey, Jesse Riggs, Jake Major, Parker Owen and Beni Kiss also scored.

Keegan Weekley had two assists in his first college match, and Griffin Felton, Ethan Pettit and Colby Pepper had one assist each. Rachel Lemay made 20 saves for the Lady Scots, who were outshot 39-2 — 25-1 on goal.

› The Bryan women are 1-3 after a 10-0 loss Friday at Cumberland, which is ranked 19th in the NAIA. Rebecca Holloway and

Emma Campbell scored two goals apiece for the Phoenix (3-0), and Mariah Aplin
