Covenant edges Sewanee in soccer

An own goal late in the first half stood up as the difference Tuesday night as Covenant College nipped host Sewanee 2-1 in nonconfere­nce NCAA Division III soccer. Evan Poole scored for Sewanee from an Alpo Sipila assist at 32:42, but Jesse Riggs netted a tying goal from a Josh Brower assist just over a minute later. The own goal came at 43:47. Sewanee (1-2) outshot the Scots (3-0) 19-10 but had only a 6-5 edge in shots on goal, and Paul Lemay made five saves in the win.

› The Tennessee Wesleyan men’s soccer team lost Tuesday for the first time in five matches this season, 4-3 at Life, despite leading 2-0 and 3-2. The shots and corner-kick totals were virtually even. TWU’s Harry Baggaley scored the first goal in each half and Gabriel Gonzalez had the score that made it 2-0 at 15:24. Ben Timms had two assists and Izaack Lambert had the first one for the Bulldogs. Ricardo Lawrence and Steinar Magnusson each had a goal and an assist for Life (1-4).

› The Bryan College men’s soccer team won 7-0 with five first-half goals Tuesday at Bob Jones University, but Bryan’s Lady Lions lost 2-0 at home to Cumberland­s. The Lady Patriots scored in each half and outshot Bryan (1-4) 15-4 in the first 45 minutes, 29-15 for the game. Caragan Treola made 12 saves in defeat. Six players scored the seven Bryan men’s goals — Haaris Hussain with two and Jonathan Ricketts, Lucas Mattos, Charlie Clarke, Brad Spooner and Artur Dombrowski — and Ricketts, Dombrowski and David Solis each had an assist. The Lions (1-2) outshot their winless hosts 15-0 in the first half and 11-3 in the second.

VOLLEYBALL

› Walters State won 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-22) in a TCCAA volleyball match Tuesday night at second-year program Cleveland State. The host Lady Cougars (2-3, 0-1) took a brief 16-15 lead in the third set.

› Tennessee Wesleyan lost 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20) to Cumberland­s in NAIA volleyball at Williamsbu­rg, Kentucky, but Allana Knowles and Sydney Ritten had 12 and 11 kills in defeat, Marjorie Smith added eight and Gabi Catt had 21 assists and 14 digs. Sam Cossidente added 15 assists and Sovanna Ramirez led the Lady Bulldogs (4-9) with 18 digs.

› Georgia Northweste­rn’s volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-23, 25-9, 25-19) to the Reinhardt junior varsity in Waleska, Georgia. Savannah Walker and Summer Fitzpatric­k had five kills each for GNTC (1-3), Walker also with five blocks.

GOLF

› With Ryann McCuistion tied for first individual­ly at 2-under-par 69, the Tennessee Wesleyan women’s golf team shared second place after the first day of the SCAD-Atlanta Fall Invitation­al tournament Tuesday at The Oaks in Covington, Georgia. The Lady Bulldogs matched Faulkner with 302s in the nine-team field, led by SCAD-Atlanta at 298. TWU’s Saylem Powell was tied for eighth with a 76, and Kelsey Cassada shared 15th at 77. Bryan was ninth at 352 but had Danielle Banda tied for 20th at 79.
