ATHENS, Ga. — Staff writer David Paschall examines the scoring drives from Georgia’s 49-7 win over Middle Tennessee State on Saturday:

FIRST QUARTER

GA — Mecole Hardman 5-yard pass from Jake Fromm (Rodrigo Blankenshi­p kick), 11:24 Drive: 7 plays, 87 yards, 3:36 Key play: An offside penalty helped Georgia pick up its inaugural first down of the game, and Elijah Holyfield emphatical­ly produced the second one by breaking free up the middle and then racing down the right sideline for a 66-yard gain to MTSU’s 8-yard line.

GA — Jeremiah Holloman 11-yard pass from Fromm (Blankenshi­p kick), 4:02

Drive: 5 plays, 51 yards, 2:19 Key play: Following a 26-yard intercepti­on return by Bulldogs cornerback Deandre Baker to the MTSU 49, third-string tailback Brian Herrien opened the drive with a 21-yard run to the 28.

GA — Tyler Simmons 56-yard run (Blankenshi­p kick), 14:51 Drive: 6 plays, 94 yards, 2:40 Key play: Backup quarterbac­k Justin Fields entered for the first time with 2:31 remaining in the first quarter and had his initial pass result in a 20-yard gain to tight end Isaac Nauta out to Georgia’s 32-yard line.

GA — Hardman 70-yard punt return (Blankenshi­p kick), 7:19 Key play: Hardman burst up the middle before heading right and having only MTSU punter Matt Bonadies to beat. It wasn’t pretty, as Hardman made an inside move near the 25-yard line and blew past Bonadies for the score.

MT — Patrick Smith 41-yard pass from Brent Stockstill (Matthew Bonadies kick), 4:21 Drive: 8 plays, 75 yards, 2:58 Key play: Stockstill and Smith connected on 5- and 12-yard gains to open the drive and stunned the Bullogs on the score when Smith took a short pass and broke free down the right sideline.

Drive: 5 plays, 59 yards, 0:54 Key play: Fields looked sharp in the two-minute offense, with his 8-yard scramble for a first down to the MTSU 47-yard line being accompanie­d by another 15 yards after Blue Raiders linebacker Khalil Brooks was flagged and ejected for targeting.
