Georgia second in Southern Cup

The 2018 IcyHot Southern Junior Cup tennis tournament concluded with doubles matches Sunday at the Champions Club, and for the first time in the event’s 24-year history Georgia did not win the top title. The Georgia team of 14-, 16- and 18-under girls and boys finished second to South Carolina in the Gold Division, with North Carolina third. Tennessee, including Hixson’s Matt Barnett, won the Silver level with Kentucky second and Alabama third. Louisiana was the Bronze winner with Arkansas second and Mississipp­i third.

SOCCER

› Lauren Peters’ goal nine minutes into the second half held up for a 1-0 women’s soccer victory Sunday for Lee University at Shorter. It was both teams’ first Gulf South Conference match of the season. The score was double-assisted by Julia Kaset and Mia Hollingswo­rth. Lee (4-1-1) had margins of 28-4 in shots and 13-2 in shots on goal, but Sydney Durham made 12 saves for Shorter (1-5).

› The Sewanee women’s soccer Tigers are 0-5-2 after losing 4-0 at home Sunday to 13th-ranked Lynchburg. Kennedy Jakubek had two goals and an assist.

› The Dalton State men’s soccer team won 2-1 Saturday at home against St. Thomas from Florida, and the Lady Roadrunner­s (5-1-1) tied Maine-Fort Kent 2-2 before beating Oakwood 12-0 on Sunday. Duvaugh Clarke and Daniel Valenciano scored for the DSC men (4-31), the latter from a Santiago Moore assist in the 85th minute. Andrea Lopez and Alyssa Bilbrey scored against UMFK. Sunday, Lopez had two goals and an assist, Caylee Carpenter also scored twice, Adriana Delgado had a goal and two assists, Adrianna Arjoon and Maria Vazquez each had a goal and an assist and Yovanka Pineda, Griselda Ruiz, Maria Ruiz, Andrea Garcia and Kaela Ebanks also scored.

RUNNING

› Led by first-place Chloe Flora with Charlee Boxall fifth and Amy Carpenter sixth, the Lee University women’s runners finished second to Mississipp­i State, 41 to 55, out of 22 teams Saturday in the Montevallo Falcons Classic cross country meet. The Lee men also were runners-up to an NCAA Division I school, Florida A&M, which had five of the first six in the 25-team 8-kilometer race — the exception being Lee’s Christian Noble, third in 24:50.37. Teammates Caleb Eagleson, Jared Herzog, Dawson Reed and Casey Guthrey were 11th, 14th, 15th and 16th. Flora’s 17:44.24 in the 5k won by 23 seconds. The Lady Flames’ Becca Umbarger was 15th, and Logan Hernandez was 29th. Division III member Sewanee was 13th in the women’s race, 19th in the men’s.

› Covenant College senior Lilly Smith won for the third time in three meets this season Saturday, and this time the Lady Scots defeated the reigning champion of their USA South conference, host Berea College, in winning the Mike and Mary Kay Invitation­al. The Covenant men were second to regionally ranked Berea. Smith won the 5k with a personal-best 19:41.8, and S.K. Lipperd was third with Michelann Settle seventh and Alexandra May, Maggie Henry and Hannah Samuels ninth through 11th. In the 8k, the Scots’ Nate Collins and Caleb Aikens were eighth and 10th with Matthew Tueller 13th, Matt Seitz 16th and Matthew Broussard 19th.

› UTC finished 12th out of 14 men’s teams and 15th out of 19 women’s squads Saturday in Vanderbilt’s Commodore Classic at Percy Warner Park in Nashville. UTC’s Ryan Gebelein was 49th in the 8k, and Emily Poole led the female Mocs with a 68th in the 5k. The Ohio State women and Eastern Kentucky men were the team winners.

› The Dalton State women’s runners were second to Cumberland at Campbellsv­ille’s five-team meet with Kay Vradenburg­h and Rachel Ward finishing sixth and seventh individual­ly and Sabrina Young, Hayley Hight and Reagan Guess 13th, 14th and 15th.

VOLLEYBALL

› The UTC volleyball team dropped to 4-9 with a 3-0 loss (25-14, 25-16, 25-17) Sunday at 20th-ranked Kentucky, the 2017 SEC champion. Gylian Finch had nine kills with a .450 hitting percentage and fellow freshman Jaquelyn Langhaim had 19 assists for the Mocs.
