Wheeler ninth in Bassmaster points

Harrison resident Jacob Wheeler finished third Sunday in the Toyota Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championsh­ip tournament on Lake Chatuge in northeaste­rn Georgia. His three-day total of 44 pounds, 6 ounces was capped by a 13-1 day. Wheeler wound up ninth in the Elite Series AOY points standings, where Spring City’s Wesley Strader finished 35th after a 44th-place (21-3) showing on Chatuge in his first year as a B.A.S.S. regular. Justin Lucas of Guntersvil­le, Alabama, won the 2018 championsh­ip by 51 points.

SOCCER

› The Lee University men’s soccer team beat visiting Montevallo 3-0 with three second-half goals in a Gulf South Conference doublehead­er Sunday, but Lee’s 19th-ranked Lady Flames lost 3-2 in overtime. Palle Jespersen, Samaan Williams and Aidan Moore scored for the Flames (5-2-1, 3-0) from assists by Jared McWhorter, Jose Orellana and Craig Quinn as they dropped the Falcons (2-5, 1-1). Julia Kaset and Mia Hollingswo­rth scored for the Lady Flames (5-2-1, 2-1), but Allye Darnell equalized within four minutes each time and the Falcons (3-3-2, 2-2) won on Romee Contreras’ 25-yard shot at 92:43. The Lady Flames outshot their visitors 17-11 overall and 11-6 on goal and took seven corner kicks to Montevallo’s three.

› The Sewanee women’s soccer team got its first win of the season Sunday, 2-0 at Maryville College. The Tigers (1-7-2) got rebound goals from Gillian Campbell at 9:06 and Sam Morgan at 51:35, and goalkeeper­s Hanna Judycki and Abigail Frazier had two saves each in the shutout. Chloe Thompson assisted on the first goal. Maryville (3-4) finished with four corner kicks’ to the Tigers’ one and had a 13-8 advantage on shots overall, but Sewanee had a 5-4 lead in shots on goal.

GOLF

› The Georgia Northweste­rn Technical College golfers began play Sunday in Thomas University’s tournament in Valdosta, Georgia, after beating Northeast Alabama 598-636 on Friday at the LaFayette Golf Course. Lane Strickland shot 145 and Noah Hankins and Spencer Alexander followed at 148 and 150 against Northeast, which was led by Brody Rickles’ 154.

VOLLEYBALL

› Destiny Stewart had 18 kills and 10 digs and Constance Connolly had 51 assists and 19 digs as Sewanee defeated visiting Rhodes 3-1 in Southern Athletic Associatio­n volleyball Sunday. The set scores were 25-19, 25-23, 22-25, 25-18. Also for the winning Tigers (12-3, 3-2), Peyton Parent had 19 digs and three aces, Ellie Pedersen 11 kills and seven block assists, Sydney White 10 kills and 11 digs, Lilly Reilly nine kills and 14 digs and Stephanie Price eight kills and five block assists.

› GNTC lost both of its matches Saturday at the Rumble in Rossville event. The Lady Bobcats fell in four sets to Welch College — the set scores were 25-21, 17-25, 25-16 and 27-25 — and in straight sets to Toccoa Falls College, 25-11, 25-15, 25-15. For the day, Savannah Walker had 12 kills and six blocks, Summer Fitzpatric­k and Morgen Simmons each had 12 digs, Mia Clark 23 assists and six digs and Jamese Miller eight digs and six aces. The Lady Bobcats dropped to 3-11.

FIELD HOCKEY

› Sewanee’s field hockey team improved to 6-1 by edging Bridgewate­r 2-1 in overtime Sunday on Ceara Caffrey’s 14th and 15th goals of the season. The Tigers gave up a goal less than two minutes into the game, but Caffrey scored from Alex Hornsby’s assist off a corner at 59:30 and netted the winner unassisted at 78:26. Sewanee goalies Rachel Blum and Kadie Hicks had seven and four saves.

RUNNING

› Led by Romeo Blackburn’s second-place 26:14 in the men’s 8-kilometer race, the Tennessee Wesleyan cross country teams both finished third in UNC Asheville’s meet Friday. UNCA and Milligan were first and second in both the 8k and the nine-team women’s 5k, where TWU’s Bree Bogucki was ninth individual­ly. Cody Demalavaz and Antonio Alejos were sixth and 10th in the men’s race.
