Arnold leads UTC to 2-0 soccer win

The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s soccer team earned its first Southern Conference win of the season with a 2-0 victory over The Citadel on Sunday at Finley Stadium.

The Mocs (5-4-2, 1-01) are on the road next weekend, taking on Wofford on Friday and Furman on Sunday.

Chloe Arnold scored both goals against The Citadel, giving the sophomore nine this season and an average of 0.9 per match, which ranks second in the SoCon.

Her first goal against the Bulldogs (6-4, 0-2) came in the 52nd minute, when she picked off an errant pass and beat the goalkeeper. Her second came on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, with Arnold nailing a low shot into the bottom left side of the net.

Ashton Shields improved to 4-0-2 in goal this season with her fourth shutout. She saved all four Citadel shots on goal.

Arnold led the Mocs with four shots on goal. Lauren Dluzewski, Masey Fox and Hollie Massey each had two, while Catherine Meyer, Anna Rogers and Maggie Shaw had one apiece.

Overall, UTC outshot The Citadel 21-8 in the match, which was delayed 49 minutes by lightning.

Golf rainout

Sunday storms washed out the final day of the Mason Rudolph Championsh­ip golf tournament in Franklin, Tennessee, with the UTC women’s team ending up 14th after Saturday’s competitio­n on the North Course at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

Host Vanderbilt was crowned the champion with a 17-under-par 559 over 36 holes. The Mocs shot a 23-over 599.

UTC’s Monica San Juan tied for 15th at 1-under 143, while Maddy McDanel had the team’s second-best score at 2-over 146 and shared 27th. Rheagan Hall (154), Esme Hamilton (156) and Dorota Zalewska (170) also competed for the Mocs.

The Mocs return to competitio­n Oct. 5-7 at the Princess Anne Invitation­al in Virginia Beach.
