It’s a packed week ahead for music lovers
BARRY COURTER: Lisa, you know I am calendar challenged, so first I need to apologize to fans of Dr. B and The Ease and Spinster for getting their Noontunes dates mixed up last week. Dr. B performed last week, and the singing sister trio is this Wednesday at noon at Miller Park.
LISA DENTON: At least anybody who showed up expecting one and getting the other could still enjoy good music. And the mention of Spinster gives me another chance to say glockenspiel, which they play.
I’ve decided to start using the word in other ways besides as a reference to a musical instrument. As in: I’ve heard about all the
glockenspiel I can take from you for one day.
BARRY: I like it. A lot.
LISA: That would apply only to someone running off at the mouth, certainly not to Spinster’s playing.
BARRY: Yes, they are really good, and I hope they have a huge crowd.
They are just one of several good shows this week, and that is not just a spiel, or glockenspiel. The Drive-By Truckers return to town at the Walker Theatre, and Songbirds is packed with shows.
LISA: Wednesday, Songbirds has The Afternooners’ EP release party with Caney Village; Thursday is a Night of Appreciation for Jeff Styles with music by Roger Alan Wade; Friday is The Breakfast Club or Forever Abbey Road featuring classic Beatles music; Saturday has Cosmic Charlie or Striking Matches with Josh Gilbert; and Sunday is Twiddle with the Jauntee. Which sounds faintly euphemistic.
BARRY: That is a busy week and nice to see people doing something for Styles, and any excuse to see RAW is a good one.
LISA: I agree. But keeping up with all that makes for a busy week.
Plus, the Chattanooga Symphony & Opera will open its new season Thursday with Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons,” and the Hamilton County Fair is Saturday and Sunday at Chester Frost Park. That’s always fun.
And I also want to check out this new event at the Chattanooga Convention Center, an expo called Fine Interiors. My house is usually more like Fined Interiors for crimes against housekeeping, but maybe they’ll let me in so I can dream.
BARRY: Parts of our house would make for really good “before” photos for the expo.
I want to let everyone know also, if they watch the Wednesday episode of Music Wednesdays on Facebook at facebook.com/ timesfreepress at noon and stick around until the end, they might win tickets to Luke Bryan’s concert in Ringgold, Georgia, on Oct. 6.
LISA: That’s a hard deal to pass up. Bryan is a four-time Entertainer of the Year — twice for the Country Music Association and twice for the Academy of Country Music. His upcoming show at Doug Yates Farm will raise money for college scholarships for students from farming families.
BARRY: We’ll be posting a question, and the first to correctly answer it and share and like the video will win two tickets. As a bonus, the show features Crazy Flute. The duo will play several of their Native American originals and discuss their recent flurry of award wins and nominations.
