Lee men’s golfer fifth at Columbus

Lee University’s men’s golf team, ranked 24th in NCAA Division II, finished fifth Tuesday — ahead of three top-10 teams — in Columbus State’s 17-school Cougar Invitation­al tournament. No. 16 Carson-Newman won at 9-under-par 843 for 54 holes, three strokes ahead of Florida Southern. Lee’s total was 862, led by Scott Odell in a tie for 24th individual­ly at 214 and Parker Gray and Dylan Lillard at 216 and 218, tied for 32nd and 37th.

› The NAIA No. 2-ranked Dalton State women golfers were in position to successful­ly defend their 2017 championsh­ip of the Carey Collegiate Classic going into Tuesday’s final round at Hattiesbur­g, Mississipp­i. Dalton State led by one after an even-par 288 in Monday’s first round, when freshman Cameron Daniel shot 70, Isabel Rijos 71, Katie Dalton 72, Haejin Choe and Sutton Rollins (playing as an individual) 75s and Hannah Gasaway 76.

› Georgia Northweste­rn’s golf team collective­ly improved by 19 strokes from the first round to the second and finished 11th at 639 in a field of four-year schools Tuesday at the Thomas University Fall Invitation­al at Valdosta. Noah Hankins ended with a 75 for a 156 for the Bobcats, and Lane Strickland (76) and Ryan Redd totaled 160.

› Tennessee Wesleyan senior Ryann McCuistion from Chattanoog­a was selected the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference women’s golfer of the week for the second time in three 2018-19 voting periods after her sixth-place individual finish led the Lady Bulldogs to third place in their own fall invitation­al at Springbroo­k in Niota. She shot 161 for 36 holes.

SOCCER

› The Sewanee men’s soccer team lost 3-0 Tuesday night at third-ranked Emory (8-0), which had goals from four players. Three came in the first half. Sewanee is 4-4.

› Lee University goalkeeper Daniel Hrenko was chosen the Gulf South Conference men’s soccer defender of the week after two shutout league wins this past weekend. He made six saves in a 1-0 defeat of Auburn-Montgomery and leads the GSC in goals-against average at 0.63, having allowed just five scores in the Flames’ 5-2-1 start. They are 3-0 in GSC play.

› The Covenant College soccer home games today have been moved off campus because of all the recent rain. The men’s team will host LaGrange at Baylor School at 4 p.m.; the Lady Scots will host Piedmont at Chattanoog­a Christian at 6:30.

VOLLEYBALL

› Lee senior Silvia Sartori is the GSC volleyball player of the week after her 59 kills in three matches, highlighte­d by 33 plus 15 digs in a 3-2 win over Alabama-Huntsville. She also had 18 kills against Shorter and is second in the conference with 230 kills and 4.26 per set.

› Tennessee Wesleyan won its sixth consecutiv­e volleyball match Tuesday, 3-0 at home against Montreat. The set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 25-18, and that made the Lady Bulldogs 10-9 overall and 6-0 in AAC play. Gabi Catt had 29 assists and four aces, Sovanna Ramirez had 18 digs and Miyah Woodard and Marjorie Smith had 11 and nine kills in the win. Smith was the AAC attacker of the week and Catt was the setter of the week for last week’s success. Smith, a sophomore from Chattanoog­a, had 29 kills and a .535 hitting percentage for the Lady Bulldogs’ three matches. Catt, also a sophomore, totaled 59 assists in six sets with 30 against Columbia College, and she added 15 digs and nine aces for the week.

› Bryan lost 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-22) to visiting Martin Methodist in nonconfere­nce NAIA volleyball but got 18 digs from Rheagan Keen and 11 from Macenzie Krause. Anna Owens led in kills with six.

› Georgia Northweste­rn’s volleyball team won 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-22) at The Crown College on Monday, as Savannah Walker had 10 kills and Summer Fitzpatric­k and Kayleigh Goff had eight kills each plus six and five aces. Mia Clark had 16 assists for the Lady Bobcats (4-11), and Morgen Simmons had 10 digs.
