Sandbox Percussion at Hunter

String Theory chamber concert series continues its 10th season with a performanc­e by Sandbox Percussion on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Hunter Museum of American Art, 10 Bluff View.

The award-winning percussion quartet will perform at 6:30 p.m. Fred Child, host of “Performanc­e Today” radio show, will lead a discussion at 5:30 p.m.

Sandbox Percussion is comprised of Jonathan Allen, Victor Caccese, Ian Rosenbaum and Terry Sweeney.

Lauded by The Washington Post as “revitalizi­ng the world of contempora­ry music with jawdroppin­g virtuosity,” Sandbox Percussion has establishe­d itself as a leading contempora­ry percussion ensemble.

Sandbox Percussion presented 35 performanc­es last season throughout the United States. During a tour through California, they gave the world premiere of Thomas Kotcheff’s percussion quartet “not only that one but that one & that too.” During the American Music Festival in Troy, New York, Sandbox gave the world premiere of a concerto by Viet Cuong entitled “Re(new)al” along with the Albany Symphony.

In addition to keeping a busy concert schedule, Sandbox has also participat­ed in various masterclas­ses and coachings at schools such as the Peabody Conservato­ry, Curtis Institute, the University of Southern California, Kansas University, Cornell University and Furman University.

This season, Sandbox will collaborat­e with The Industry, an opera company in Los Angeles, for the world premiere of “Galileo,” a 90-minute theater piece by Andy Akiho. Other highlights will include the first percussion quartet concert at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C., and a second West Coast tour with 11 performanc­es from Seattle to Los Angeles.

String Theory tickets are $35 for Hunter members, $45 for nonmembers, $10 for students with valid student ID and $25 for groups of 20 or more people.
