Gilpin wins 10k Signal Pie Run

Former UTC runner John Gilpin won the 10-kilometer Signal Mountain Pie Run on Saturday. Gilpin finished in 34 minutes, 1 second — 3 1/2 minutes ahead of runner-up Joseph Wilson (37:33), with masters winner Paul Deaton (38:05) and Jeremy Miller (38:56) third and fourth. Jennifer Huwe was the women’s winner and fifth overall in 41:49, and Kristen Bonsor was the second female and 14th in 45:41.

VOLLEYBALL

› UTC lost 3-0 at Furman in Southern Conference volleyball Saturday, by the set scores of 25-20, 25-14, 25-20. Jaquelyn Langhaim had 25 assists and Brenna Everingham had 16 digs for UTC (8-15, 4-6), while Gylian Finch

had 10 digs with a team-high six kills.

› Lee University lost 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 25-19) to sixth-ranked Tampa and edged Saint Leo 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 16-14) in the GSC/SSC Crossover in Orlando. Against 22-1 Tampa, Silvia Sartori had 18 kills, Bailey Kress 13 kills, Hanna Matthews 39 assists and 13 digs and Allie Koepfer nine kills and 11 digs. Against Saint Leo, the Lady Flames (13-13) got 22 kills and 21 digs from Sartori, 17 and 10 from Kress, 53 assists and 11 digs from Matthews, 34 digs from Micaela McMichen, 10 kills from

Alex Reuter and 13 digs from Koepfer.

› Ellie Pedersen had 13 kills, Destiny Stewart 10 kills and 11 digs and Constance Connolly 40 assists and 15 digs as Sewanee won 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) in SAA play at Rhodes. Also for the Tigers (18-7, 8-5), Mason Gardella had nine kills and Peyton Parent 14 digs.

› Covenant College lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20) to Huntingdon and won 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-18) over Agnes Scott in a USA South trimatch in Montgomery. Against Huntingdon (19-9, 9-1), Riley Howe had 14 kills, Hannah Harris nine kills and nine digs, Emily Moore 16 assists and 12 digs, Sophie Puertas 14 assists and Hannah Stewart 10 digs for the Lady Scots (12-12, 10-2). In the win, Alexa Spurling and Howe had 11 and nine kills, Puertas 22 assists, Moore 22 digs and three aces and Harris, Leah Buys and Stewart 14, 11 and 10 digs.

› Sydney Ritten smashed 17 kills in Tennessee Wesleyan’s 3-2 AAC win (25-17, 25-16, 24-26, 23-25, 15-7) at Columbia Internatio­nal. Also for TWU (14-16, 10-7), Kalyse Garrett had 25 assists, Madison Weir and Sovanna Ramirez had 22 and 16 digs and Marjorie Smith and

Maura Emert added 11 and eight kills.

› Bryan College lost 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 25-14) in an AAC match at St. Andrews but got 13 kills from Mariah Dunlop, 11 kills and 13 digs from Anna Owens, 16 and 13 assists from Jennifer Keck and Sydney Pierce and 10 digs each from Rheagan Keen and Megan Malone.

GOLF

› The UTC women’s golf team shot an aggregate 316 Saturday at the University of Louisville club and was tied for 12th after the first round of the 14-team Cardinal Classic. The second round was suspended due to darkness. The Mocs’ Monica San Juan was tied for 18th with a 75; Maddy McDanel shot a 78.

SOCCER

› Jonathan Barrett’s unassisted goal in the 64th minute gave the Covenant men’s soccer team a 1-0 USAS home win Saturday against William Peace (8-3-5, 6-2-3). Paul Lemay made four saves in the shutout for the Scots (11-5-1, 8-21), who led 20-13 in shots and 7-4 in shots on goal. The Lady Scots (9-7-1, 6-2) won 4-0 at Wesleyan (Georgia) with two goals by Kyra Duble,a goal and an assist by Paige Simons, the opening score by Abby Gienapp and assists by Lizzy Hightower and Kailey Burrell.

› In SAA soccer Saturday, host Sewanee lost 3-1 to the Centre men (11-4-1, 4-2-1) and 5-0 to the eighth-ranked Centre women (160, 7-0). Kyle Johnston’s 11th goal of the season, from an Ethan Dutka assist at 16:29, gave the Sewanee men (7-8-1, 2-5) a temporary lead. The female Tigers are 6-10-2, 3-4.

› Tennessee Wesleyan beat the Montreat women 5-0 and the Montreat men 6-2 in AAC romps in Athens. Skotti Bullington, Emiley Saddler, Dayna Randall, Samantha Green and Rachel Bean scored for the Lady Bulldogs (8-5-1, 8-2-1), who had margins of 35-3 in shots, 20-1 in shots on goal and 12-0 in corner kicks. Yuri Parisotto scored twice and Ben Timms, Kyle Wynne and Andy Ward also dented the net for the TWU men (12-4, 7-2), whose 14-3 shots margin included an 8-2 edge on goal.

› Bryan fell 2-0 to Milligan’s women and 1-0 to the Milligan men in AAC play. The Bryan men lost on a goal with just over a minute left in regulation time, despite margins of 22-3 in shots, 7-2 in on-goal attempts and 9-3 in corners.

FIELD HOCKEY

› Centre scored two goals in the last five minutes to beat visiting Sewanee 3-1 Saturday and stay undefeated in SAA field hockey. Ceara Caffrey scored for Sewanee (8-5, 2-2). Centre is 10-3, 4-0.
