2 nights of Halloween fun in Cleveland, Tenn.

- STAFF REPORT

Two nights of Halloween fun are planned in Cleveland, Tennessee — the first night’s event somewhat of a warm-up party for Halloween night’s big street party Wednesday.

“Tall Betsy & Friends” will be the topic of ghost stories told by members of the Cleveland Storytelling Guild on Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. during History Happy Hour at the Museum Center at Five Points, 200 E. Inman St. in Cleveland.

Tall Betsy, sometimes called The Lady in Black, is part of Bradley County folklore. Children of the 1930s were sometimes cautioned by their parents that if they failed to come home before dark they might run into Tall Betsy, who would take them back to her mausoleum in Fort Hill Cemetery.

Cleveland entrepreneur Allan Jones capitalized on Tall Betsy in 1980 by reviving the story of this witch from the tales told to and by his mother. Tall Betsy annually appeared on Centenary Avenue on Halloween night through 1998.

Guests coming to History Happy Hour are asked to get in the Halloween spirit by coming costumed. Impressions Catering will provide food with beer from Mash & Hops and Dry Valley Brewing.

The party is free to museum members, $15 for nonmembers.

Halloween night, little ghosts and ghouls will fill Cleveland’s downtown square when the 31st Halloween Block Party is held from 5 to 10 p.m.

This huge street party draws thousands of visitors. Little trick-or-treaters can fill their bags with lots of candy on Mars Chocolate’s Treat Street. There will be three stages of entertainment, food, games and a costume contest.
