Local 7.5 combo team wins state

- STAFF REPORTS

Local tennis teams captained by David Snyder have won Tennessee championships before — eight in the last four years alone — but his 7.5 combo doubles guys did so in particularly remarkable fashion last weekend in Knoxville. Many of the matches were close, but the Chattanooga team won 16 of the 18 and all six team contests, and a lot of them were in first-time combinations, some even without the duos having practiced together. Two men who played four matches had different partners for each. “It could have backfired,” Snyder said of his mixing and matching of styles, “but it worked out great and everyone played well.” Other players were David Hilley, Ken Ellinger, Dan Barry, Tony Bartley, Kirk Kelly, Terry Bartley, Tom McCullough, Bob Lype, Randy Johnston, Peter Nowotarski and Michael Short.
