NITTANY LIONS HOPE MCSORLEY CAN BE AVAILABLE VS. WOLVERINES
KEYS FOR PENN STATE
A healthier McSorley: Much of the Nittany Lions’ success has been contingent on the big-play ability of quarterback Trace McSorley; that may be in jeopardy if he’s limited against Michigan. McSorley suffered a right leg injury in the second quarter of last week’s 30-24 win over Iowa. He returned two series later, and despite hobbling while wearing a knee brace, engineered a second-half comeback win. His status is unclear, but the Lions will need McSorley if they hope to clear this large hurdle.
Keep it close: Penn State has played four straight games decided by six or fewer points, and this should be no different, provided McSorley plays. Despite losses to Ohio State and Michigan State in that stretch, the Lions usually shine in close, high-pressure situations.
KEYS FOR MICHIGAN
Feed Higdon: Michigan running back Karan Higdon rushed for 144 yards on 33 carries two weeks ago against Michigan State, which came in allowing a nation-best 79.6 yards per game. Often overlooked and overshadowed by quarterback Shea Patterson’s steady performances, Hidgon is the offense’s workhouse, eclipsing 100 yards rushing in all but one game, a week 1 loss to Notre Dame. Lean on the defense: Michigan ranks first nationally in total defense, allowing just 220 yards per game. The Wolverines’ pass coverage has stood out the most, surrendering 122.9 yards per game and a measly 4.82 yards per completion.
PREDICTION
Michigan 38, Penn State
24: Penn State embarrassed Michigan last season with a 42-13 win that Jim Harbaugh’s team hasn’t forgotten. Since losing to Notre Dame in the season-opener, the Wolverines have embarked on a revenge tour that includes seven consecutive victories.
