TWU players get AAC special honors

When the Tennessee Wesleyan soccer teams face Reinhardt today in the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference tournament semifinals, they will be led by the AAC men’s player of the year and the women’s defensive player of the year. TWU’s Harry Baggaley is not only the overall men’s honoree and first-team all-conference but also the freshman of the year and the Golden Boot winner with a league-high 13 goals. The Lady Bulldogs’ Els van Hooijdonk is the women’s top defender and joined on the All-AAC first team by teammate Dayna Randall.

TWU’s Lauren Cunningham, Samantha Green, Kelly Morine and Livia Walker

made the second team along with Bryan College’s Makena Giles and Ana Ramirez, and TWU’s Tiffany Pace made the Champions of Character team. In addition to Baggaley, the men’s All-AAC first team included Alex Horton, Dino Jones, Jonathan Ricketts and Brad Spooner of Bryan, and the second team contained Charlie Clarke of Bryan and Nick Croucher, Ben Timms and Kyle Wynne of Wesleyan. TWU’s Gabriel Gonzalez and Bryan’s Marcelo Monteiro were Champions of Character selections.

* Baylor School graduate Kyle Johnston from the town of Sewanee finished his Sewanee college soccer career as a four-time All-Southern Athletic Associatio­n selection, named Monday as a first-teamer. He had 11 goals and two assists as a senior. Tigers teammates Johnny McNeill and Alpo Sipila made the All-SAA team as a defender and midfielder, respective­ly. Sewanee’s Caitlin Fahr, Paige Rupp and Savannah Williams

received women’s All-SAA honorable mention.

› Dalton State sophomore goalkeeper Samuel Fraire was chosen the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s soccer defensive player of the week for his heroics in the Roadrunner­s’ 0-0 overtime time at third-seeded Florida College in the SSAC tournament. Dalton State advanced to Wednesday’s round with 5-4 success in a penalty-kicks shootout, which included a stop by Fraire.

RUNNING

› Dalton State’s Rachel Ward and Kay Vradenburg­h earned All-SSAC recognitio­n for their finishes in the conference cross country meet last Saturday, and Ward and Sabrina Young made the five-runner women’s all-freshman team.
