Bryan rolls into AAC men’s final

The Bryan College men’s soccer team was clearly on Point in the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference tournament semifinal Tuesday night at West Point, Georgia. The fourth-seeded visiting Lions won 4-1 over top-seeded and nationally 25th-ranked Point University (16-2-1) and will visit No. 2 seed Reinhardt for the championsh­ip Friday. Reinhardt (13-3-2) beat Tennessee Wesleyan 4-0 with four second-half goals Tuesday, ending the Bulldogs’ season at 13-6-1 as Todd Fidler assisted Victor Profit on the first goal and scored the next two. The Wesleyan women (10-5-1), seeded second, will host third seed Reinhardt (12-6) this afternoon. In the upset romp Tuesday for Bryan (12-5-2), the Lions had a 10-2 margin in shots on goal and broke a scoreless tie with four goals in a 17-minute span starting at 50:15. Brad Spooner scored from a Lucas Mattos assist and then assisted on the first of two Jonathan Ricketts goals. Aaron Attree converted a Marcelo Monteiro assist to make it 4-0. Point finally scored with just over two minutes left to play.

FIELD HOCKEY

› Sewanee had four players on the All-Southern Athletic Associatio­n field hockey teams announced Tuesday. Junior forward Ceara Caffrey and freshman midfielder Anne Cleveland made the All-SAA first team, and freshman defender Caroline Sugar and junior midfielder Jo Jo Young were second-team honorees. Caffrey scored 18 goals, including five game-winners, and added two assists in earning all-conference distinctio­n for the second time, while the other three particular­ly excelled defensivel­y for the 10-6 Tigers. Young is a three-time All-SAA pick.

VOLLEYBALL

› The University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a volleyball team concludes its regular season with matches tonight at Samford and Friday at 5 p.m. at home in Maclellan Gymnasium against Western Carolina. As of now the Mocs (9-18, 5-9) would be seeded eighth for the Southern Conference tournament next week, but they could rise as high as sixth with two wins. “As can be seen throughout the conference standings, this league is as good as it has ever been top to bottom, and I think anyone can beat anyone on a given night,” coach Travis Filar said in a UTC release. “With that being said, I’d take our group of kids over anyone’s.”

› Tennessee Wesleyan is seeded sixth in the eight-team AAC volleyball tournament that begins Thursday in Kingsport, Tennessee. The Lady Bulldogs (16-20, 11-8) play third seed Milligan (23-5, 16-3) in the 4:30 p.m. match. Reinhardt (30-6, 19-0) is seeded No. 1 with Point (23-11, 16-3) No. 2.

BASKETBALL

› A local high school basketball jamboree will be held Thursday evening at Chattanoog­a Christian School with five girls’ and five boys’ mini-games and a Waffle House Shootout midway through. The Soddy-Daisy and East Ridge girls will tip off the event at 6, followed by the East Ridge and Silverdale Baptist Academy boys, the Signal Mountain girls against GPS and Boyd-Buchanan’s teams against the Hixson boys and Brainerd girls. After the shootout, Notre Dame will play the Howard boys and Sequatchie County girls, Sequatchie’s boys will take on McCallie and Red Bank’s girls and boys will face host CCS. Admission costs $5.

› The Cleveland State basketball teams lost their doublehead­er Tuesday at Snead State, 82-47 in the women’s game and 73-49 in the men’s. That dropped the Cougars to 1-2; it was the season opener for the Lady Cougars.

› NCAA Division III member Sewanee lost 97-53 in a men’s basketball exhibition Tuesday night at Lipscomb, but sophomore Luke Smith had 11 points and seven rebounds in his 30 minutes on the court for the Tigers. Joey Knox added eight points.

GOLF

› Sophomore Matthew Cleary became the third Dalton State College player in a row to be the Southern States Athletic Conference men’s golfer of the week after pacing a team victory. Cleary was the medalist in the SSAC Fall Preview with a 4-under-par 140 for 36 holes.
