Terriers run well in playoff opener
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Wofford freshman Nathan Walker rushed for 90 yards and a touchdown as the Terriers beat Elon 19-7 on Saturday to advance to the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs for the third season in a row.
Wofford (9-3), which shared the Southern Conference championship with East Tennessee State University and Furman but received the league’s automatic playoff berth via tiebreakers, will next face No. 4 seed Kennesaw State (10-1).
Wofford totaled 344 rushing yards on 59 carries against Elon (6-5). The Terriers forced turnovers on Elon’s first two drives of the second half, with Mason Alstatt’s interception and Jireh Wilson’s fumble recovery the takeaways.
Luke Carter scored the first points of this year’s FCS playoffs with a 32-yard field goal in the first quarter to give Wofford the lead. He made three other field goals, missing one attempt, with a long of 33. Carter capped drives of 13, 11, eight and 14 plays, with a field goal in each quarter.
Brelynd Cyphers had a 1-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, and Elon led 7-6 at halftime.

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — Former Cleveland High School quarterback Austin Herink passed for 260 yards and a touchdown and ran for another, and Marion County High School graduate Jacob Saylors added 82 yards on nine carries, but East Tennessee State University’s breakout season ended with a first-round loss in the FCS playoffs.
The Buccaneers (8-4) led 10-7 after the first quarter and 20-10 at halftime, but the Gamecocks (9-3) rallied in the second half as Zerrick Cooper finished with 226 passing yards and three touchdowns.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — Daniel Santacaterina threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Southeast Missouri State earned its first FCS playoff victory in program history, scoring all its points in the third quarter.
The Redhawks (9-3) will travel to Utah to face No. 2 seed Weber State in the second round.
The Seawolves (7-5), making their fourth FCS appearance, outgained the Redhawks 404240 in offensive yards, but they turned the ball over four times — and three of those miscues led to touchdowns.
› Duquesne 31, Towson 10
TOWSON, Md. — A.J. Hines turned a screen pass into a 71-yard touchdown for the lead, and he rushed for 175 yards and another score as Duquesne rolled in the second half to win in a relentless downpour.
The Dukes (9-3), who lost to William & Mary in 2015 in their only other FCS playoff appearance, will travel again next Saturday, taking on No. 5 seed South Dakota State (8-2).
In the first two quarters, Duquesne managed only a Mitch Maczura 32-yard field goal to end the second half, trailing 10-3. But Daquan Worley scored up the middle on a 48-yard run early in the third quarter to tie the game before Hines took Daniel Parr’s pass to the end zone.
The Tigers (7-5) were making their first playoff appearance since 2013 and third overall.
› Montana State 35, Incarnate Word 14
BOZEMAN, Mont. — Troy Andersen ran for a touchdown and threw for another to lead Montana State to victory. His touchdown run was his school-record 20th of the season, while his touchdown pass was just his third.
Montana State (8-4) got a key touchdown early in the fourth quarter when Travis Jonsen scored on a keeper from the 19 to push its lead to 28-14 after a personal foul moved the ball back from the 4-yard line. Andersen then hit Jonsen from 37 yards out for the final touchdown.
Quarterback Sean Brophy, filling in for the injured Jon Copeland, was making his first start of the season after starting all the games last year for Incarnate Word (6-5). He finished 22-of-35 for 313 yards with two touchdown passes.
› James Madison 20, Delaware 6
HARRISONBURG, Va. — Ben DiNucci passed for 223 yards and a touchdown, and James Madison’s defense clamped down on Delaware in the perennial power’s latest playoff victory.
The Dukes (9-3), who have won two national championships and are making their 15th playoff appearance, will travel to play No. 8 seed Colgate (9-1) next Saturday riding a threegame winning streak.
The Dukes outgained the Blue Hens 316-185 in total offense and had a 15-minute advantage in time of possession against the fellow Colonial Athletic Association team. The teams didn’t play each other in the regular season.
Delaware (7-5) was making in its first postseason appearance since 2010 and its 21st overall.
› Nicholls State 49, San Diego 30
THIBODAUX, La. — Chase Fourcade passed for 337 yards and two touchdowns, and he ran for 82 yards and two more scores as the Colonels (9-3) advanced to a second-round matchup at No. 3 seed Eastern Washington.
Dontrell Taylor ran for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, and Nicholls State amassed 269 yards on the ground and 606 yards of total offense.
San Diego (9-3) scored three straight touchdowns to cut the deficit to 42-30 early in the fourth quarter, but Fourcade scored on a 13-yard run and Nicholls State held the visitors scoreless from there.
› Northern Iowa 16, Lamar 13
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Marcus Weymiller rushed for 128 yards, Trevor Allen ran for 112 and Austin Errthum kicked three field goals as Northern Iowa edged mistake-prone Lamar.
The Panthers (7-5), making their 20th appearance in the FCS playoffs, now must travel to play No. 6 seed UC Davis.
Errthum’s final field goal was a 35-yarder with 13:09 left for the final margin.
The Cardinals (7-5), making their first FCS playoff appearance, lost two fumbles in the red zone and had two field-goal attempts go wide right, all in the second half. The last miss came with 2:50 left in the game, and the Panthers were able to run all but 15 seconds off the clock.
