East Point man arrested in slaying of philanthropist

-

Police in Georgia said they’ve arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a businessman and philanthropist who was shot to death outside a pharmacy.

Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish told a news conference Sunday that 24-year-old DeMarvin Bennett of East Point is being held in the slaying of 73-year-old Jack Hough.

Hough was sitting inside a parked car outside a pharmacy when someone shot him twice Thursday night during an apparent robbery. Hough’s wife was inside the store at the time.

Police said investigators found forensic evidence that led them to Bennett, who is being held on a murder charge.

Court records aren’t available to show whether Bennett has an attorney.

Hough is an Air Force veteran who developed and operated food courts in airports and shopping malls.
