Lee hosting golf women’s regional

Gulf South Conference champion Lee University will host the NCAA Division II South Regional women’s golf tournament Monday through Wednesday at Cleveland Country Club. Eleven of the 12 participat­ing teams are ranked in the nation’s top 21, and six of the top 10 players are included. No. 1 Barry heads the field, joined by No. 3 Nova Southeaste­rn, No. 5 Florida Tech, No. 7 Lynn, No. 11 Limestone, No. 12 Rollins, No. 13 Florida Southern, No. 17 Saint Leo, No. 19 Tampa, No. 20 Lee, No. 21 Flagler and South Atlantic Conference champion Anderson. “Needless to say, we couldn’t be more excited about having the opportunit­y to host NCAA regionals. This is a big deal to our program, and I also think it’s a big deal to our community,” Lee coach John Maupin said in a school release. “Cleveland Country Club has been so supportive of our programs, and we’re looking forward to showcasing our home course. I think this will be a great experience for all the teams involved. The conference win was really big for our team. We saw every player on our team step up and provide a lift during the week. We’ve talked all year about peaking at the right time, and wanting to play our best golf down the stretch. Our focus is just on preparing as well as we possibly can and enjoying the opportunit­y to compete at home.”

› Former University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a golfer Matthew Brock tied for 42nd at 293 Wednesday in the 2019 PGA Profession­al Championsh­ip at the Belfair club in Bluffton, South Carolina. Brock, the head pro at Spring Creek Ranch in Colliervil­le, Tennessee, closed with a 76.

› Sewanee’s Nick Powell and Sophie Morrill made the All-Southern Athletic Associatio­n golf second teams. Powell led the Tigers with a 73.19 stroke average for his senior season and finished 22nd in the SAA men’s tournament last weekend. Morrill tied for 10th in the women’s league tourney and had an 81.31 average for 201819.

BASEBALL

› Lee University senior third baseman

Miguel Pimentel was an All-Gulf South Conference first-team selection for 2019, and junior catcher Justin Fragale was a second-team pick. Pimentel had a .708 slugging percentage with 56 hits, 13 home runs, four triples, 36 walks and 41 RBIs this season, while Fragale batted .317 with eight doubles and 27 RBIs and led the GSC by throwing out 18 of 44 runners trying to steal.

› Bryan College jumped seven spots to No. 16 in the NAIA’s final baseball poll of the season Tuesday, and Wednesday the second-seeded Lions beat Milligan 10-4 as the Appalachia­n Athletic Conference tournament began in Kingsport, Tennessee. Then top-seeded Tennessee Wesleyan, No. 2 nationally, won 15-12 against Bluefield, improving to 45-8. For Bryan (36-13),

David Scoggins was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, Jesus Astudillo was 2-for-3 with a homer and three runs, Lake Burris also homered and Wade Weinburger was 2-for-4 and matched Astudillo and Tucker Cain with two RBIs.

› Chattanoog­a State is seeded fourth for the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament and opens at 11 a.m. EDT Monday against host Columbia State. Third-seeded Cleveland State is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. meeting Monday with Dyersburg State.

› The 20th annual UTC softball appreciati­on dinner is set for Monday at 6 p.m. at White Oak United Methodist Church. › Cleveland State’s seventh-seeded Lady Cougars will face 10th seed Southwest Tennessee at 1:30 p.m. EDT Sunday in the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII tournament at Columbia State. Top-seeded Chattanoog­a State plays Monday at 11 a.m. EDT against the Sunday winner between Roane State and Jackson State.
