Family Dinner Week kicks off Sunday

- STAFF REPORT

Dine out and enjoy a good meal while also helping homeless families during Family Dinner Week, which kicks off Sunday, May 5, and continues through the following Sunday, Mother’s Day.

Organizers encourage Chattanoogans to dine at one of the following four restaurants next week, and a percentage of sales will be donated to the Maclellan Shelter for Families at Chattanooga Community Kitchen, which supports homeless families in transition to stable housing.

STIR, 1444 Market St. “We are truly grateful for the generous support of restaurants participating in Family Dinner Week,” said Jens Christensen, president and chief executive officer of the Community Kitchen.

“Whether patronizing these locally owned eateries for breakfast, lunch or dinner, please be intentional where you dine between May 5-12, as a percentage of every meal will support the Maclellan Shelter for Families.”

The Maclellan Shelter for Families, the first shelter of its kind in Chattanooga, opened its doors in 2014 and features 13 units with 64 beds.

“Other emergency shelters have gender restrictions that result in many families being separated,” officials said. “As a result, fathers with young daughters and mothers with young sons were separated, sometimes those as young as 6 years old. To date, nearly 500 families, comprised of more than 1,500 men, women and children, have called the Maclellan Shelter for Families home.”
