Burrows’ Mocs get UMKC transfer

University of Tennessee at Chattanoog­a women’s basketball coach Katie Burrows announced Wednesday the addition of 5-foot-10 transfer Brooke Hampel, who played one season at guard for Missouri-Kansas City. She will have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules. The Hazel Green, Alabama, resident started 22 games as a Kangaroos freshman and averaged 9.3 points per game. She recorded 13 double-figure games during the season and had her first collegiate double-double early in the season at Denver. “We are excited to have Brooke join us this season,” Burrows said in a UTC release. “She is a hard worker and will bring a ton of energy to our team. We can’t wait to start working with her this summer.” Hampel was a Miss Basketball finalist in Alabama her senior year, averaging 17.5 points, nine rebounds and three assists, and led Hazel Green to the state championsh­ip as the tournament’s MVP.

› Lee University is bringing Beyuan Hendricks back to his hometown to continue his outstandin­g basketball career. His father starred at Cleveland State, his mother is a Cleveland High

School graduate and Beyuan attended Stuart Elementary in Cleveland before going to Baylor School, where the 6-foot-2, 170-pound guard averaged 18 points, five rebounds and four assists a game this past season for the Division II state runner-up. He was a TSSAA Mr. Basketball finalist and said he considered UTC, Furman and Alabama-Huntsville before signing with the Cleveland school. “We have built a great relationsh­ip with him during the recruiting process,” Flames coach Bubba Smith said in a Lee release. “We have loved watching Beyuan develop into one of the top point guards in the state. His high basketball IQ , passing and playmaking ability, scoring and leadership qualities make him a perfect fit for our style of play. We expect Beyuan to have an immediate impact on our team. Not only is he a great talent, but an even better person.”

› Ryan Scoggins has been named boys’ basketball coach at Dalton High Schol. He has been the boys’ soccer coach at Northwest Whitfield as well as head coach of the freshman basketball and freshman football teams and was a varsity basketball assistant for five seasons. Scoggins coached the Northwest soccer team to the 2018 Class AAAA state championsh­ip, earning the National Soccer Coaches Associatio­n coach of the year award for Georgia. He has 20 years of experience in education and has been working as a physical education teacher at Tunnel Hill Elementary. He will teach P.E. at Dalton. “We are looking forward to having Coach Scoggins lead our boys’ basketball program,” Dalton principal Steve Bartoo said in a release. “He is a high-quality individual who will provide the leadership expertise and continuity that we want for our basketball program.”

BASEBALL

› Drew Walker is the new baseball head coach at Ringgold High School. Walker played at Ringgold and has been an assistant there under Brent Tucker the past five seasons. “Drew will do a great job here,” said Tucker, who resigned Monday after 12 seasons in charge. “The players love him, and I know the school wants to keep him here.” Walker was a four-year starter for the Tigers and three-time Times Free Press Best of Preps honoree. He was a four-year starter at Armstrong Atlantic State University and earned All-Peach Belt Conference honors as a third baseman in 2011.

SOFTBALL

› Chattanoog­a State played Temple (Texas) in the opening round of the NJCAA Division I softball national tournament Wednesday night in St. George, Utah. See www.timesfreep­ress.com for the result.

GOLF

› Cleveland State’s Colbe Cagle shot a 75 Wednesday and is tied for 48th out of 132 golfers midway through the NJCAA Division II men’s tournament at Plymouth, Indiana. He had an 83 in the rain-plagued first round.
