CFC attack strikes quick

- STAFF REPORT

The Chattanooga Football Club’s scoring attack was as electric as the sky Wednesday night in Antioch, Tennessee.

CFC was ahead 5-1 in a National Premier Soccer League match against host Inter Nashville FC when play was halted in the 51st minute after lightning struck nearby. After a delay of more than an hour and a half, the match was called at 11:15 p.m. Eastern and both teams left.

However, according to CFC’s official Twitter account, representatives of both teams were communicating with league officials and it was not known whether the match would be resumed or be considered official as is — and thus a victory for the Chattanooga team.

CFC averaged a goal almost every 10 minutes.

In the 43rd minute, a headsup play by Caleb Cole set up an incredible finish for Jose “Zeca” Ferraz. Mason Walsh served in a cross from the right flank to find Cole, whose diving header from the top right of the goal area was sent to the perfect spot on the far left of the 5-yard box for Ferraz to finish with a header for a 3-0 lead.

Defender Jordan Dunstan began the high-scoring night for CFC in the fourth minute, and Walsh, Alun Webb and Everson Lima added goals in the 35th, 45th and 49th minutes.

CFC would improve to 7-1-1 with a victory and stretch its winning streak to seven straight matches. The regular-season NPSL Southeast Conference champions will host the conference playoffs July 12-13 at Finley Stadium. CFC will play in that Friday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinal match.

CFC will conclude its NPSL regular-season schedule this Saturday in South Carolina against Greenville FC.
