Brazil tops Peru for Copa crown

- WIRE REPORTS

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil didn’t need Neymar to win another Copa América title at home. With its injured star watching from the stands at a packed Maracanã Stadium on Sunday, Brazil beat Peru 3-1 to win its first South American title since 2007. It was Neymar’s replacement, Everton, who led the team to victory, scoring a goal and setting up another to give Brazil its ninth Copa América trophy and fifth at home. Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison also scored for Brazil, which has won the title every time it hosted the tournament. Everton was voted the final’s top player and also finished as one of the tournament’s top scorers, with three goals. Neymar, who was ruled out before the tournament because of an ankle injury, sat with his son close to Brazilian President

Jair Bolsonaro among the crowd of nearly 70,000. Veteran striker Paolo Guerrero equalized for Peru with a 44th-minute penalty after a handball by Brazil defender

Thiago Silva. The goal allowed Guerrero to become the Copa América’s all-time leading scorer among active players, with 14 goals. It was the only goal conceded by Brazil in six games at the tournament. Brazilian fans had some reason to worry after Gabriel Jesus was sent off in the 70th minute because of a second yellow card, but Peru couldn’t pull off one last upset after eliminating Uruguay in the quarterfinals and two-time reigning champion Chile in the semifinals.

› ATLANTA — Bradley Wright-Phillips scored the game’s second stoppage-time goal to help the New York Red Bulls tie Atlanta United FC 3-3 in an MLS matchup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He put away a low entry by Cristian Cásseres Jr. to cap the scoring in the third minute of stoppage time. Justin Meram gave Atlanta (9-7-3) a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, but goals by Daniel Royer in the 37th and Brian White in the 60th put the Red Bulls (8-7-4) up 2-1.

Josef Martínez drew a foul in the penalty area and converted his ensuing kick to make it 2-2 in the 79th minute, and his header in the first minute of stoppage time put Atlanta ahead.

› PHOENIX — The Phoenix Suns have traded Josh Jackson and De’Anthony Melton to the Memphis Grizzlies for guards Jevon Carter and Kyle Korver. Phoenix also parted with a 2020 second-round draft pick and a conditional 2021 second-round selection in Sunday’s deal. Carter played 39 games with the Grizzlies as a rookie last season. Korver’s contract is expected to be bought out by Phoenix. Also, the Dallas Mavericks have acquired guard Delon Wright from the Grizzlies in a sign-and-trade agreement, a person with direct knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the move hadn’t been announced. Wright and the Mavericks have agreed on a $29 million, three-year contract, agent Greg Lawrence said Sunday.
