Mocs add two FBS transfers

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football coach Rusty Wright added to the Mocs defense Monday with the announcement that former Louisville defensive back Aaron Floyd and Charlotte lineman Dantrell Barkley are participating in summer workouts and will be eligible to play this season. They continue the Mocs’ influx of former Football Bowl Subdivision players. Floyd (5-foot-10, 200), who is from Florence, Kentucky, spent four seasons with the Cardinals. He redshirted in 2015 and played in a total of three games the last two seasons. A two-time member of the ACC honor roll, he is pursuing a master’s degree in education at UTC. Barkley (6-4, 285) played in seven games for the 49ers in 2018. He was a three-star junior college player at Independence (Kansas) Community College in 2017 and redshirted in 2016. At one time a South Carolina commitment, he made the 2018 Conference USA honor roll and has two years of eligibility remaining at UTC. “Building our roster with quality student-athletes is an ongoing process for us this summer,” Wright said in a release. “Both of these guys bring in good academic credentials and are going to help us on the field. We are now up to 88 on the roster and plan to add some walk-ons when camp starts to get us where we need to be.”

› Former Ooltewah High School and Lipscomb University golfer Samantha Griffith grabbed a three-stroke lead in the first round of the 2019 Chattanooga Women’s City Amateur tournament with a 68 Monday at Brainerd. Former high school state champion Lindsey Hollis from Signal Mountain was second at 71, one shot ahead of UTC coach and two-time defending champion

Colette Murray. Patty Donahoo, Hazel Davis and Linda Carter were tied for fourth in the open division at 75. The tournament continues today and Wednesday. Debbie Durham at 73 and Carol Massey at 74 led the senior division, which also wraps up Wednesday but takes today off. Each division has three flights, and all six players in the open first flight were within a stroke of each other Monday.

› Dalton State College released the fall-semester schedule for its women’s golf team Monday, and it begins Sept. 16-17 with the Sand Shark Invitational in South Carolina. Jim McGrew’s Lady Roadrunners will play Sept. 23-24 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Oct. 7-8 in Valdosta, Georgia, and host the Roadrunner Women’s Invitational Oct. 20-22 at Nob North.
