Lookouts lose 13th straight, two shy of Southern record

The Chattanooga Lookouts are closing in on a Southern League record they would rather avoid.

Chattanooga lost its 13th consecutive game Saturday night, 4-3 to Jacksonville, before an announced AT&T Field crowd of 3,204. The 1971 Columbus Astros set the league mark with 15 straight setbacks on their way to a 51-91 season.

The Lookouts were 44-40 overall and 8-7 in the second half when their skid began.

Jacksonville struck quickly Saturday, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning on Joe Dunand’s RBI double to center field and Stone Garrett’s two-run home run to left. Mitch Nay had a two-run homer to left in the bottom of the first, pulling the Lookouts to within 3-2.

The homer was Nay’s 13th this season.

Jacksonville went up 4-2 in the third on Lazaro Alonso’s solo homer to right, and the Lookouts made it 4-3 later in the third on Ibandel Isabel’s groundout RBI. That would be the end of the scoring, as Chattanooga’s ninth-inning attempt included Nay grounding out to second base, Isabel grounding out to third and Jose Siri striking out.

Alex Wood starting Monday vs. Barons

First-year Cincinnati Reds pitcher Alex Wood will make a rehab start Monday with Chattanooga as the Lookouts open a five-game series at Birmingham. Wood has yet to play for the Reds this season due to back trouble.

The former University of Georgia standout was Atlanta’s second-round pick in 2012 and compiled a 21-20 record with the Braves from 2013 until being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2015 season. Wood had a 16-3 record with a 2.72 ERA with the Dodgers in 2017 and went 9-7 last season.
