‘Forbidden Planet,’ ‘Double Indemnity,’ and ‘Bullitt’ part of local summer series

- STAFF REPORT

After the success of the outdoor screening earlier this year of “The Creature From the Black Lagoon,” the Chattanooga Film Festival will present the 2019 CFF Summer Film Series at Miller Park. The trio of films to be shown are among the best examples of their respective genres ever made.

The science fiction classic “Forbidden Planet” from 1956 will be shown Wednesday; the film noir crime drama “Double Indemnity” from 1944 will be screened Aug. 14; and the action thriller “Bullitt” from 1968 will be shown Aug. 28. All will be shown at 7:30 p.m.

All of the Summer Film Series screenings are free and open to the public. There will be food trucks on hand so folks can enjoy dinner, snacks and refreshments. Each film will include a special introduction giving viewers more context about each movie.

This special outdoor, free screening series is made possible by the Open Spaces Partnership in Animation and Community Enhancement Program, which serves as a mechanism to increase activity in community parks

and open spaces through an equitable grant program that covers the cost of park rentals for organizations that meet criteria set forth by Open Spaces in correlation with other city departments.

“Forbidden Planet,” starring Anne Francis, Walter Pidgeon and Leslie Nielsen, is the story of a commander

who is sent to a colonized planet to investigate why communications from a group of scientists stationed there have ceased.

“Double Indemnity” stars Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck and is considered the quintessential example of film noir. It was directed by Billy Wilder.

“Bullitt” stars Steve McQueen, Jacqueline Bisset, Robert Vaughn and Robert Duvall. It is still considered one of the best movies for car chases and action anywhere.

All screenings are free, but it is highly recommended that attendees RSVP via Eventbrite: bit.ly/2LL7es8.
