Final Heavenly Jubilee Gospel Festival set for this weekend

- STAFF WRITER BY SUSAN PIERCE

After more than two decades, the Heavenly Jubilee Gospel Festival is coming to a close.

Organizer Pat Hookey has announced that this weekend’s gospel singing will be the last of the annual three-day music events. However, she will still continue to host music in area nursing homes, churches and on Saturday mornings at The Biscuit Barn.

This last gospel festival opens today, Aug. 1, at 9 a.m. in Patriot Hall in Ringgold, Georgia. It continues from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Aug. 2-3. Hookey says more than 170 gospel acts have been scheduled over the three days. Each will get 15 minutes onstage.

Among these local and regional acts will be Kenny Webb, Highly Favored 3, The Yarbroughs, David James, The Pounders, Dewayne Castle, Luke Stone, Jacob Drake and Mike Slatton,

Also, Craig and Debby Tyndall, John Bond, Charles Long, Kathryn Adams, Rescued, Brenda Bradshaw and Jimmy and Lisa McClure.

Hookey uses the festival as an opportunity to collect food donations to help stock three churches’ food pantries.

“Admission is $5 plus seven nonperishable food items to feed the hungry. Anyone who brings the cans and $5 will receive a blue ticket that gets them in all three days, as long as they hold onto the ticket and present it on the second and third days,” she explains.

Those who don’t bring canned goods will pay $10 each day.
