Allmond, Rice win Brainerd golf titles

After opening with an 11-under-par 61 on Saturday, Dalton State College senior golfer Sport Allmond coasted to the 2019 Brainerd Invitation­al championsh­ip with a 67 on Sunday. The 16-under 128 gave Allmond a five-shot win over fellow Heritage High School alumnus Hunter Cornelius and Taylor Lewis, and Jay Potter was fourth and the 40-over flight winner with a 134. Potter’s 66-68 combinatio­n was the same one that won the senior division by two strokes for Bob Rice. Trent Mansfield was fifth in the regular division at 135, and 40-over runner-up Tom Schreiner was sixth at 136 with Philip Guess and Hayden Hunneke sharing seventh at 137. Chris Hall and Richard Keene completed the top 10 with 138s. Behind Rice in the senior division, Scott Patton closed with a 65 for a second-place 136, and John Lambert at 141, Johnny Pierce at 142 and Tom Baird at 143 finished third through fifth. Bret Douglas and Frank Hollowell tied for sixth at 144, Neil Spitalny and Larry McGill tied for eighth at 145 and Mitch Hufstetler was 10th at 147.

› Dalton State recently released its 2019 women’s soccer schedule, and the Lady Roadrunner­s’ 17-match regular season begins with battles against two area Tennessee teams. They open at home at Lakeshore Park on Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. against Tennessee Wesleyan and then play at Bryan in Dayton on Sept. 3. Then they visit Johnson in Knoxville on Sept. 10 and host Johnson on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. DSC will host NCAA Division II team Shorter at 5 p.m. on Sept. 18 and then play consecutiv­e road games Sept. 21 at Trinity Baptist, Sept. 22 at Life and Sept. 24 at Cumberland. The Lady Roadrunner­s will open Southern States Athletic Conference play Sept. 28 at home against Middle Georgia State. Subsequent home games are set for Oct. 12 against Florida College, Oct. 31 against Bethel and Nov. 2 against 2018 SSAC tournament champion Martin Methodist.
